We all know stress ulcers....any patient that happens to unfortunately visit the ICU usually has the risk of developing them and we all know how frequent thos patients are given H2 blockers.....

Anyways.....
this is the case.... you have a 34 year old patient who has had a motor vehicle accident and is in the ICU with multiple fractures...etc....

the patient is unconsious and on a ventilator.......what is the preferred medication fro the prevention of stress ulcers in this setting:

1...Cimitidine
2....omeprazole
3...sacralfate
4...misoprostol

Well ...in other words the question says what should you give to a patient to protect the stomach if that patient is:
1...in the HOSPITAL
2...INTUBATED
3...Obviously UNCONSCIOUS

The pt on ventilator: u give IV H2blockers. These stress ulcers in association with brain injury are called cushing ulcers or curling ulcers

No...the preferred agent for these patients...is Sucralfate......and not any HCL reducing substance......why?

Because these patients are prone in this setting to regurgitation of stomach contents......and If no HCL is there than the bacterial load would be high......(HCL ...strong antibacterial property)

This is probably one of the rare instances where sucralfate is indicated
