To be honest, I do not see any reason to say that you do not need to have it.

You are eligible for match ONLY if your credentials are verified by NMRP/ECFMG. This means that you have to PASS (not take, but PASS) StepI/IICK-CS exams by the end of February. When you pass all these three exams, you will get your certificate within 2 weeks. So, If any of your exams are not passed by the time the NMRP states it completed its verification for the season, you will be removed from the match. Period. If you pass the exam and are awaiting your certificate in the mail, then this is another issue. Be careful.

As far as I know (and you can correct me if I'm wrong) there is no mention on the NRMP website that you have to be certified by the ECFMG to be eligible for the Match. On the contrary they specifically mention that they will ONLY confirm your EXAM STATUS with the ECFMG (1. http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/faq/ind_apps_faq.ht... 2. http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/ind_ap... 3. http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/ind_ap...

You'll notice that at no point in any of the above references did they mention that you must be ECFMG certified. ECFMG certification has 2 components : the examination requirement and the medical education credential requirement. All of the above references specifically talk about the examination requirement. Why would they do that if they actually meant that you have to be certified. Why not just say that you have to be certified?

People keep talking about "verification of credentials" mistakenly assuming that what the NRMP refers to as "credentials" is the same thing that ECFMG refers to. What does the NRMP refer to as verification of credentials for international applicants? There is a page that deals with that specifically here (http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/ind_ap...)

The page starts by mentioning that NRMP will ONLY verify the credentials that they mention below and at no point did they mention ECFMG certification. Rather, they spefically mention the exams. Again I ask, if they actually meant ECFMG certification why not just say so?

For those yet to be convinced here's more (http://www.ecfmg.org/2008ib/ibgrad.html)

I'll quote:

"You can also participate in the NRMP prior to becoming ECFMG-certified, provided you have passed the exams required by the NRMP, and the results of these exams are reported to the NRMP in time to participate. See National Resident Matching Program."

The statement above is from the ECFMG 2008 Information booklet.

Another thing you might want to consider is that STUDENTS of international medical schools are eligible for the match. As we know, ECFMG certification requires both a final medical school diploma and transcript which they don't have.

You might also want to see this (http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/ind_ap...) which lists reasons for withdrawl from the match. They only mention the exams not certification.

We also have anecdotal evidence from forum members who have called either the NRMP or ECFMG and have been told that they do not have to be certified. It's worth noting that (to my knowledge) no one has reported calling either organization and hearing otherwise. And that brings me to my final point :

If you are not certified and you're unsure if you are eligible for the Match or the Scramble, don't take our word for it, go ahead and call the ECFMG or NRMP and confirm it yourself.

Good luck cashmed!
