Today Clinical Cases and Images blog ( an interesting blog by the way ) posted this article:

"According to the The Times: the National Health System (NHS) is closing its doors to foreign doctors in an attempt to preserve jobs for British graduates.

What is the reason?

Since 1997, the number of medical schools in Britain has doubled. There are now enough home-grown graduates, thus reducing the need to import doctors.

Currently, half of Britain's 277,000 registered doctors were trained overseas. Last year, 10,000 foreign doctors applied for 20,000 posts.

What will happen to the foreign doctors currently in the UK or planning to relocate there?

(Now here comes some bad news for us)

Many international medical graduates (IMGs) will plan to continue their training in the U.S. or Australia. According to anecdotal evidence, it is much more difficult for the IMGs to find residency positions in the U.S. nowadays due to the influx of competition from Britain.

The situation is worse in Australia where IMGs have to wait months just to take the board exams required to start training.

"The Home Office announced yesterday that, from next month, doctors living outside the European Union will not be eligible to apply for posts through the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme — hitherto an open door to migrants with the right qualifications."

" The changes will have no effect this year, when there are expected to be at least three applicants for each training post, with as many as 20 per post for the more favoured specialities such as surgery."

if it ever made an impact then it should have happened a couple of years ago since UK has announced that it would close its door many years ago. the fact is average step scores remained static through the years with only 2 to 3 points inflation lately. ppl apply widely nowadays just for the heck of it and this partially gives rise to the elevated applicant:spot ratio, programs might be a little overflooded with applicants but the competitive ones, i believe, are still and will continue to be hard to find and they will match.

Arlete, you are acing the exams not passing them! I'm sure you'll do just fine. You deserve the best.

Yes Jack, a big part of the problem in my opinion is that people are applying to too many programs (way too many!). That said, you still cannot ingnore the fact that several thousand new applications will come from over seas after the UK closed its doors in their face.

Thank you, praying!wink

I agree with you, people are applying to programs they have no intention to participate in, just to play safe, the PDs are flooded and end up calling the same people. I bet the number of interviews people are cancelling or simply not showing has increased, too! Maybe bbb knows more about it.
