Hi everyone!
Hope the wait is less unnerving for everyone else than for me...
am getting an offer from a really good program which unfortunately is J1 and so wondered how many years does one have to work in a J1 waiver job before the home return clause is waived...??
also how many of you guys and girls would take a J1 if the program was, say number 5 in US....while good but less prestigious programs were offering H1B...i'd be so grateful to hear what others think on this...

Hi Mukho! It really depends on wht ur priorities are. I would personally not take J1 if there are places ready to offer h1 even though less prestigious. Its not dt difficult to get a waiver job but then the jobs r in remote rural areas. Also sme people say dt it becomes difficult to find a waiver job after doing a fellowhship and if u do one before getting a fellowship, it doesnt look gud on ur resume. U have to work for around 2 years in a waiver job. If u r very ambitious, dreamt of going into a gr8 university then go for J1 offer. If u want to have a cool preplanned life then take the H1 from gud but not so prestigious program.
Hope it helps. Gud luck

Thanks decide...for me the program matters so much that maybe the certainty of a good training shadows the uncertainty of a J1 ...someone told me a waiver job is a mandatory 5 years and that kind of freaked me...2 years sounds more doable...lets see how things go...good luck to u too!!

J1 is certainly better to get fellowships and waiver is 2 years only. i have never heard anyone struggling with waiver.. If you like the program and it has good reputation. take it.

Infact with all these new rules coming in for GC following H1B, especially with Indian and Chinese FMGs... J1 is turning out to be better. at present, even for less competetive felloships, I am noticing how many more interviews people with J1 are getting in comparison to H1.

Good Luck with ur decision.

(Btw.. i am on h1, therfore above is not a biased statement; why I am not on J1 is a long story.)
