Hello friends,
I'm confused about where to rank JHU/Sinai among community programs? Would you rank it higher than "community programs with in house fellowships"?
On the interview day, the residents at JHU/Sinai were very confident about fellowship positions, for eg: chief resident there got into mayo (endocrinology) and others also into very good fellowships.
How much can we sacrifice for JHU title?
Thanks.
Hey guys why don't you all write your queries, we can help each other with rank order list.

Hi ea,
Am stuck with the same dilemma-Also what doesnt help is Baltimore doesnt seem to be the best place to live- most of the faculty prefer to lve closer to washington
I have the same problem ranking university affiliated programs in general- like Memorial hospital in Rhode Island- also affiliated to Brown University- same funda as Sinai- no chance for IMGs in JHU or in Brown Uni- so the best option seems to be Uni affiliated community programs but always difficult to say what the affiliation really means- I doubt that when u apply for fellowships people are going to treat you like JHU residents even though u might have the Id from JHU or whatever- As for the impressive endo fellowships I guess its because Prof cooper is a big shot in thyroid and if thats what u want maybe sinai is the best choice- aslo if I remember right the Chief resident who was going to mayo had a lot of things going for him- he was an AMG from a hifi US med school, had done research, was a chief resident, probably all of that helps more than the JHU/sinai tag- That said Sinai seems a better choice than other community programs with no research/ fellowships- but if the program has in house fellowships, I guess its a difficult decision

hey hypomanic,
Know what, I had my interview even at Memorial hosp, RI ! Thats nice..... i can keep track of you and god forbid, if one of us doesn't match than we can learn lessons mutually!
I also had med/peds interview in few univ programs.... so worried about where to rank them! Did you apply for any med/ped programs?
My cred are 99/96/pass/79, need visa, no USCE. Stay in touch....

Hi ea,
Nope I didnt apply for med/peds- only when I met someone on the IV trail did I realise that its a good option especially if you want to go to primary practice- And I thought it could be useful if you are interested in hem/onc- BMT fellowships

But I guess it must be difficult ranking all these- Uni/community/Int Med/Med Peds
My creds are similar- 99/99/pass, not given step3, need visa, no USCE
wish you all the best for match and send me a PM if you need any more info
As for the lessons learnt- I realised the importance of USCE/USLoRs and have decided to start the thread to collect the lessons learnt- feel free to contribute

BTW between MHRI & Sinai which will you rank higher? I am a bit confused as MHRI has wonderful opportunities, being close to Boston and most friends in the US warned me about baltimore (the city)
Although i liked both programs, on interview day at least, it appeared as though MHRI had closer affiliations to Brown than Sinai to JHU (because of the other JHU affiliates like Bayview seemed to be closer to JHU)
What did you think?
anyone else, interviewed at these places feel free to correct me

But the success rate with fellowships in Sinai is greater compared to Memorial. The program size at Sinai, the title of JHU and yeah Cooper's name.... I think I will go with Sinai. I agree Memorial has a very peaceful neighborhood, close to Boston and decent fellowship positions. But, I doubt on the competitiveness among residents at Memorial, the morning report was cold!
Residents at Sinai, are more challenging, research oriented and willing to do those competitive fellowships. Meanwhile, did you receive any follow up letters from these programs? I received a small letter from Eleanor. How about you?

sinai baltimore is a pretty good training place, affilitaed with JHU, and though u might not actually land up at a fellowship spot in JHU itself, but the LORs u get from the electives done there do a mighty job for u in the fellowship match, and as far as the Baltimore city is concerned, it has some pretty decent living areas as well, try the area close to Union Memorial hosp, it is safe (very much), and quite affordable as well smiling face

Hi ea, rockingdoctor,
Thanks a lot for the input- nice see inputs- I must agree that Sinai had a great fellowship list- 25 cardiology spots is great - almost 20% of all their fellowships- especially since its a community program and an opportunity to do do electives at JHU is awesome.
ea- I must admit I didnt attend morning report at sinai -only the noon conference and I met only a couple of residents but I felt that at sinai residents were more serious about fellowships- a lot of residents at MHRI were going to primary care- some for visa issues and I dont know how many because of lack of fellowship options- I must admit the Chief resident at MHRI seemed to be doing all that she could to improve morning report and make it more academic and educational
and I thought the computers at Sinai were great!
