Can you WORK as MD with Step 3?

Hi guys,

Are you allowed to work doing moonlighting or doing primary care once you have passed Step 3?

No, you still need residency in the US to get a medical license. The USMLE are exams that make your eligible for residency.

But, wait a minute...

Step 1, 2 CK and CS make me elegible for residency... I only need Step 3 to apply for H1B VISA, to the best of my knowledge that exam certifies that you are capable of practicing primary care medicine without supervision...

That is why I was wondering why wouldn't a IMG with all tests get a temporary job in a primary care clinic or something... in case you do not match, it doesn't make sense to do medical assistant or something like that when theoretically you are way more qualified. (let alone all those folks out there with a residency in their home country in surgical areas)

What do you think?

I don't think you can practice with step 3. Coz you still have to apply for a state license and if you check the different states' requirements for licensure, you have to have at least a couple of years of postgraduate training before they issue you your license.

And that has to be in a US residency program? I have already done a residency in Ob/Gyn in my country.

Withour a residency you will not get a licence so you cannot practice

But you still have to get a license to practice medicine independently - for that you need residency. Sorry, but it doesn't matter what you think - you can't do it.

You can't work as a physician in the USA without completing a residency.
