Fellows, I want ot ask you a question that I believe is affecting many people. I am married, with 2 children, and by now I was supposed to be ECFMG certified, but I haven't still seriously begun to study for step 1 because of procrastination, fear and objective family issues. How does one fight this? This is a serious problem for me.

Check inside of you if you really (I mean REALLY) want to be a doctor in USA. If the answer is "yes", that's all you need. Write in big letters "I want to be a doctor again" and fix it somewhere you are going to read every day, roll up your sleeves and find time for studying, even if it's late at night or early in the morning when everybody is sleeping. You may sacrifice your sleep time, you may sacrifice your dedication to others. But you'll get where you want, you'll be happier and make other people happier too. If that's what you really want. There's a lot of inspirational stories in this forum, read some of them if you need it. The eagle is the only bird who flies no matter how the weather is. Believe me, it's time for you to be an eagle now. Good luck!

silver: that's why the eagle represents the USA... or so I've heard. CocaCola: you'll have it when you are 37! bioguy: it's one way to get motivated, too!

Arlete's way is great when you're in a position to listen to and comprehend words of wisdom and inspiration. But bioguy's works when you're simply frozen on aotu-pilot, and you're barely breathing, and the cold grip on your heart that says you'll never make it till you score good on this or else you'll be............. Ok, I really got to study..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Off I go.

Hi mihazor, arlete ,bioguy Yes PROCRASTINATION, has been a majorproblem in my life too I have wasted my time alot, Not out of sheer wasting time, but getting involved in activites that simply do not help in studies, to top it off, i have no one around in the medical field that can encourage or inspire me. Notmy husband none of the other members in my family i just spent my time trying to prove my self in other things , that didnt make a difference anyway (like - cooking and othe domestic things in life that house wives do - what did i get , not an ounce of appreciation , and i'm still labeled the girl who doesnt know how to handle her household) verrrry frustrating. well after years of procrastination and struggles to study, i finally made th e plunge, but am not exactly able to do much with a toddler. My baby takes up much of my time, and finishing my prep in 3-4months time seems very difficuilt. but as arlete said, be an eagle, you are soooooo right and when i imagine what bioguy made us imagine, it freaks me out i know i have to study, but its just slowing down because now i am a mom just have to be persistent and squeeze out every drop of time i have O lord help Thanks everybody, just needed some inspiring words, because i was feeling so down glad i saw this thread good luck everyone!!!!!! sam

i always find that it is much harder to actually get started studying, then it is to keep going once you've started. so you basically just have to find a quiet corner and start. maybe start your day with questions, then take a 10 min break, and then go over the answers. this might get you motivated. after that get started with reading. create a schedule that is realistic and stick with it. and maybe leave one day open at the end of the week just for catch up if you fell behind during the week. and schdule in frequent SHORT breaks so you dont get too tired while studying. most of all, dont take too long to study, or you may get burned out, and become unproductive and risk forgetting important things. good luck to you, and dont freak out! that is a huge wast of time!

Mihazor and samdoc i totally identify with u guys esp what samdoc wrote. and i must say this forum helped me to get back on my feet and focus, arlete and many others gave me a lot of advisewhich i took , things are going little slow but they have'nt come to a halt. and like sleepy_student said it is difficult to get started but once u do get started u will not stop and it might go slow but it is not impossible to keep it going. One thing that really helped is to get a study partner. even if u have to get a study partner for each subject it is worth it. i get 4 hrs in the morning and if i'm lucky 2 hrs at night. 2 hrs in the morning i do path with one study partner and the remaining 2 hrs physio with another . both on phone . so out of the 4 hrs i probably wasted maybe 5 mins max. when i was trying to study by myself out of 4 hrs i probably studied 2 1/2 -3 hrs because u always have somthing to do or u get bored.. u have a sense of accountability which helps. i think that u need to do this atleast for u r first reading till u can get back on ur feet so to speak.doesnt matter for people like us which subject we start just find a study partner and do it. be it FA,Path what ever. i started with 2 hrs /day. Now i'm at 6hrs /day. I'like every one else have my bad days too when i feel like just giving up then i think of my life ahead looks bleak, look back no better there, look at yesterday and i'm happy b'cos i got some studying done and don't want it to go waste so i pick up my books. got myself wireless head phones so when my kids are sleeping i watch the kaplan dvds. or catch up on some other subject that i need to.when i take my daughter to her dance lessons i'm prbably the only mom there busily muttering away some path from flash cards while all the other moms are planning play dates or going out for dinners.i keep the q book in my car so when i go to pick up my daughter from school and i'm sitting in the car waiting for them to come out i manage to do 5 Q's with the ans if i am lucky maay be more. Sorry about this, i've got some question book or the other in every loo in the house so when i go in idon't come out till i've done five Q's, that is the only time if i'm lucky that my kids will not bother me,i'm not always that lucky but i'll take whatever i get. I have'nt decided when to give my exam, i will decide when i am a little bit more confident about myself does'nt mean i am going to take for ever, with the time i get i've set myself 8-10 months so in another 6 months i hope to give my exam i'm trying for earlier but with kids around u never know.So far 10 months it is. I did'nt mean to write my life story or anything like that ,All i'm trying to say is it is not immpossible many before us have done it and many after us will do it, Question is do u want to be a part of it? I hope this helped. All the best , if u need anuthing ucan PM me.

hey friends , i totally agree with u.i'm a very good procrastinator too... studying with partners is really helping me very much.now ,i started 3 subjects with 3 partners. and i think we( who can not study individually...what ever may b the reasons) can concentrate more if we spend our time with a study buddy. and we need constant motivation too...that may come from a study schedule, maintaining a study journal and inspiring experiences from nice people in forums. just my 2 cents....
