Hey everyone
I am new to this forum. I want your advice on my chances in FM or Obgyn? I am 1997 grad, have 8 years UK experience in Obgyn (2years of which was solid research in reproductive medicine....now submitting my thesis for MD(research) degree). I have MRCOG and 4 publications and a book chapter. My problem has been with my step 1 score (79 on second attempt). Step2 CK (93 on 1st attempt), Ecfmg certified and step 3(84 on 1st attempt). I need H1. I had to come to US after my marriage last year.
I applied this year in NY only for IM/ FM and Obgyn...just got 1 interview in IM (that too through a contact!). My chances of matching this year is low. I would appreciate some sincere advice on what I can do to improve my chances for next year. I will scramble but cannot bet on it. We have applied for GC and hope to have it by next year. We live in NY but I am prepared to move away for a year or so.
Any sincere suggestions will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Malaru! The only reason I can see for ur getting very few ivs mite be ur attempt on step 1. The best way would be to do an observership or research in a program where u want to be. As u would know obgyn is more competitive than im and im is more than fm, so ur chances could follow this sequence. However, it depends on ur interest and ur publications in obgyn would definitely help. I am sure by looking at ur experience, u could impress people by working with them. So try for observerships at a few places and then those places mite wanna take u or atleast u would get gud recommendations. Also u could do join some research in case u dont match this year. Also u would need to apply wider but green card would open many more options for u. Gud luck

First of all i suggest that You should try in OBGYN coz you have MRCOG and IM PD's know that you are intrested in OBGYN not Im so My suggestion is get OBGYN Observerships/Externships(would Be ideal) and use FM as back up. BUt please apply broadly what do you mean I applied only in NY. Every year You are away from your graduation year so YOUR CV need to more strong that WAY.
I wish you good luck

Thank you both for the advice. I didn't want to move away from family...so that's why applied only in NY...but see your point. I considered options other than Obgyn due to family reasons....because my husband is going to be a Urologist and we thought it would be good for at least one person to have a quieter family life which is unlikely in Obgyn. But looking at the interview responses, I am worried that my doors are closed for obgyn too even with lots of experience. Will surely take your advice and try to get some research post or observership in Obgyn and try FM as well.
Thank you and GL to you for everything!

I can Understand but my opinion is to apply broadly and also apply to small community programs I said not not only but I said also small commmunity programs

malaru, you want a solid year of usce? Go for pgy 1 surgery the least competitive and easiest residency to find...
1 year of hands on usce will open many doors.

Hi Mazinger
Do you really think getting into PGY-1 surgery is easy in scramble?Any personal experiences?

There are around 50% seats unfulfilled for surgery prelim, it shd be doable in scramble. But i m not sure how much benefit does a surgery prelim do to u as it is lots of work nd dt too scut work and most places rnt willing to offer u a categorical place after dt.

And u join in july and september is the date for applying again for next match...

Thanks decide...will try my luck in scramble for prelim surgery. I don't want a categorical spot after that and if it will give me USCE, that would help me to open up my options...I suppose!
