Hi. I came across a question that related brain atrophy with HIV. Can anyone explain this relationship?

  #2

The relationship is of HIV and brain atrophy is based upon the infiltration of the virus through affected moncytes. The neurotoxin porduced result in a greater damage than expected leading to Coritcal and Sub cortical damage. Unlike any other viral infection or encephalitis the clinical signs and symptoms start appearing even before the neurons get affected. It is the intense autoimmune reaction mounted by the mononuclear cells that by releasing the cytokines they cause neuronal injury.

Hope this helps.
