well , it depends on your scores, if you already got high scores , do it for 3 to 6 month , if your score was not highe enough it will be better tostay more than 6 month
sure it will have a great feedback in your chances as it makes you prefered candidate ,the cost differs from place to another and some requires tution fee others dont ,so it depends on the place .

US experience is always a nice and strong plus. And for medical students, many american medical schools take on international medical students for electives. If you plan to do that, do as early as you can. Best of luck.

I think the meaning of internship in Unites states is different from some other countries- correct me if I'm wrong. In my country- and Eygpt as far as i know- we do 3 month of medicine and surgery each, and 2 months of obs/ gne and peds each. Isn't in that equivelent to the transitional year in US ,and the intern ship is the first year of residency ?

abdo internship here in egypt is done after graduation

internship in egypt is only necessary to get general registeration as a general practitioner and to practice in egypt

this year is the first year in us residency

so i think u should try to do electives

  #10

well thanks but can i do electives when i m in emtiaz here in egypt .. and will electives for 3 - 6 months will help me to get residency

abdo you should do an elective and not an observership. This is your best and only chance since you are currently in your final year. There are many schools that offers electives for international students. So you choice should depend on the school u want to do the elective in- best to be the one you want to join later for residency, the speciality you want to do the elective in- and here it better to do it in the specitialy you want to join in future so PD get to know you and so you can obtain a good letter of recommendation, and last it should depend on how much you can afford since the fee range from 250/ 1 month elective up to 3200 $ without the accomodations .

visit this website to know which university do offer electives for international medical students.

http://services.aamc.org/eec/students/index.cfm

then visit this website to determine how good is the hopital in the specialty you want to go for

http://health.usnews.com/sections/health/best-hos...

and finally visit the school website to know the requirements for the elective.

you should go for it. Yes it's a long process, but it worth it !

P.S. It may not be easy become your school does not require an elective fr you to be certified for graduation so you may not have a month or two break to do an elective so you have to work it about with your registrar office. Plus, As far as i know the graduation month in Eygpt is june or july - correct me if i'm wrong- so you have to do an elective before this time and the due date of most of the electives that are before june-july are over ! So, Lot of work to be done !!!

It's better to do your electives in the states so it can be counted as USCE and you obtain LOR

regarding the possibility of doing observership during you internship year-

You should check if you program allow you to take a break when doing your internship .I don't think there is a restriction about the time of doing observership in US as long as you are a graguate. iI believe it is mainly about your syste ( i.e. wether they allow you to do it while your doing internship).

abdo it is legal to do the two months of anaesthesia and emergency medicine outside egypt

but htey must be hands on not observership

so during ur internship u can do theses two months abroad........as regard other rotations they must be done in egypt

besides i tried during the sixth year to do an elective but got many rejections and surrendered

hope u do it

so my advice is to start contacting usa universities from now and at the same time study

Hi... Having done electives for 1 month and what I gather from forums, I believe them to be superior to observerships.

So if some one has graduated or is about to graduate and enter the so called internship year in his country,
Can they not apply for electives/ externship during that time??
How do US schools see these med students who are in the transition phase from med school to residency?

  #21

In my country, intership is not seens as final year because we get our graduation certificate before doing this year. If your school release your certificate after the internship and it is regarded as a final year in your system, then you may apply to electives and seen as a student in the final year. What i know, when appling to electives, your graduation date is what determines your final year so if it is after finishing the internship year then it may be considered your final year. I think you should contact the university your intrested in taking elective in and explain your situation , they understand and they'll help you in that.
