Some universities allow 1-3 rotations...others allow more time.... whatever you do in US before Graduating is great, and you'll have more opportunitites also...
I know that people from latin america can go to Harrington Program (U Miami) for long periods of time... it's more like an observership...
try to go to the most prestigious institution you can, and work hard to get strong letters of recommendation...

so, any US clinical experience will definitely increase your chances of getting a position...

cost depends on many many factors.... tickets, rent, food, transportation, fees, etc...

I don't know if for "internship"... internship here is the first year of residency

I doubt Universities allow people to do that long rotations.... In the US the last year (4th) of medical school is a Sub-internship...
check this link for "clinical electives" :

Yep, try really hard to get some before graduation - much easier and if you are lucky, you can get a really good hands-on experience. In terms of where(small vs.prestigous)- it is a question of luck. I did some at a community hospitla( a relatively big one, but no national name recognition-please don't ask me to disclose the name) and I had an awsome experience, met great doctors and received good letters- I think they helped me a LOT to get interviews. If you go to a big name but you have no hans-on, just observing, hoping to get a letter from a big guy...I don't know, again it is a question of personal preference and luck ,of course.

Bottom line- get anything you can!!! nod I am sure it will help you later, no matter where you go to.
