I took my exam in Philly at the end of november and did not feel good about it.I did not know how they were grading: what they actually were looking for.
My first three cases were rocky because I felt very nervous but after that, things got easier in terms of patients 'communications and physical exam.
I only prepared for one month really burning the oil in the last week. I used FA and UW and that it all that is needed. Must do everything in FA though.
I knew right off the bat that English would not be a problem so I concentrated on interacting with the patients a lot thru the whole exam. I spent less time doing a physical. You have to understand that they are not real patients and all you have to do for the most part of the physical is to do the motion. For example, when doing an ear exam do not really spend time looking for the eardrum just quickly look in the ear. If they want you to see something it will be obious. Do not overlook anymarks on the patient even though it is not part of the chief complaint.
After the test I did look back into my FA and noticed that I did miss a couple of dxs and the ICE was the part that worried me the most.
By the grace of GOD I made it. This was my first exam and I am now looking forward to Step 1.

In conclusion, all that I can say is that it is very doable.

Hi Yendor:

I live in New York so I took the Amtrak the morning of and took it back that afternoon.
I had 2 peds cases and 2 phone cases.
I am a mom who workd full time. Istudied for a month for about 4 hrs a day and longer on the weekends.
I did all the cases in FA including memorizing the mini cases. I did UW for exam techniques and questions also.
For FA, I first read the case and then formulated questions and check my line of questioning with the book then I wrote my PN and then compared with the book. In the beginning I was off but got better with practice.
I did not have a partner but when I neede to I used my kids or husband to practice a specific physcical examination task..I did study alone for the most part.

I hope I have helped you.

Dr PCN
There was no need for me but I do not how confident you are in the various stages that they are grading us. I need a little bit more information before giving you my feedback.
