Overcoming Procrastination

When you face a difficult task, it can sometimes feel like you’re trying to move a mountain.

The longer you stare up at the mountain, the more overwhelming your task seems. In this situation, it's very easy to start procrastinating by finding other things to do.

Procrastination is one of the major obstacles that you need to overcome in order to make your dreams a reality.

The secret to overcoming procrastination is to stop looking up at the mountain and start looking down at your wheel barrow.

Let me explain…

When you look at a complex task in its entirety, it is very easy to become paralysed by the sheer amount of work that you need to do. Your mind starts telling you that ‘it’s impossible’ and you spiral downward into a sea of negativity.

The way to overcome this paralysis is to change your focus and stop thinking about the overall task you need to complete. Instead, just concentrate on something you know you can achieve.

Let’s look at an example to see how this works in the real world.

Peter is facing the ‘mountain’ of writing a PhD thesis. When he thinks about writing a 500 page document, it just seems too overwhelming and so day-after-day he procrastinates and avoids getting started.

Each morning, Peter asks himself, “Can I write a 500 page document?” and his internal answer is “NO WAY!” so he procrastinates and looks around for other things to do – He takes his kids to school, goes to the gym, does the shopping. Anything to avoid the mountain that is sitting in his study.

Finally, Peter realises that the best way to overcome procrastination is to stop looking up at the mountain and start looking down at his wheelbarrow.

Instead of asking himself, “Can I write a 500 page document?” he begins his day by asking, “Can I work on my PhD without being distracted for 1 hour?” – his internal answer to this question is “Yes – I can easily do 1 hour”

Peter blocks out all distractions and works on his PhD for 1 hour. At the end of the hour he feels like he has made a small amount of progress. He asks himself again, “Can I work on my PhD without being distracted for 1 hour?” – Since he has already done this, he knows the answer is ‘Yes’ so he does it again.

By the end of the day, Peter has completed four hours of effective work on his PhD. He is tempted to look up at the mountain but he knows it is much better if he just focuses on moving his wheelbarrow one hour at a time.

After a month of following this routine, Peter takes a look at his mountain and sees that his 1 hour blocks of action have made a dramatic impact. This gives him even more confidence and momentum to keep moving forward.

Step-by-step, one hour at a time, Peter moves his mountain.

If you are currently trying to move a mountain in your life, here are the steps you need to take in order to overcome procrastination and get the job done!

Lesson :

(1) Stop thinking about the overall task you need to complete.

(2) Instead, focus on a small component of the task that you know you can achieve.

(3) Ask yourself, “Can I work on this task without being distracted for 1 hour?”

(4) Forget about everything else other than working hard for 1 hour.

(5) At the end of the hour, ask yourself the same question again.

(6) Move your mountain one hour at a time.

(7) Enjoy the amazing sense of achievement that comes from completing a difficult task.

The Battle Within

Everytime you decide on a new goal, you set the scene for a battle to begin. It is a battle between two lions that live within your heart.

Your golden lion is noble and passionate and will fight to make your goal a reality. Your black lion is negative and destructive and seeks to tear down your goal and prevent you from achieving success.

Every day these two lions wage a battle within your heart to decide whether or not you will achieve your goal.

The big question is - Which lion will win?

The answer is - Whichever one you feed the most.

Each positive, uplifting thought you have, feeds your golden lion and makes it stronger. On the other hand, every discouraging, negative thought you have, feeds your black lion and makes it more powerful.

Every time you take action and do something towards achieving your goal, your golden lion leaps into attack.

Every time you fail to take action and get distracted, your black lion pounces.

Here's a real life example based on the goal of losing weight:
Time
Action
Result
6.30am

Your alarm clock goes off and you choose to get out of bed and go to the gym. Your golden lion awakens and starts the day strongly.
7.30 am

You choose to have a healthy breakfast. Your golden lion roars his approval.
10.30 am

At work it is someone's birthday and you choose to have a piece of birthday cake and an apple danish even though they are not part of your eating plan. Your black lion leaps into action and attacks.
11.00 am

You get angry at yourself for eating the birthday cake and start having negative thoughts about yourself. Your black lion grows stronger.
12.30 pm

At lunchtime you choose to have a chicken and salad wrap instead of deep fried take away. Your inner lions clash again. Your choice makes your golden lion stronger.
3.30 pm

You are tempted to have a chocolate fix but instead you choose to have two pieces of fruit. Your golden lion delivers a powerful blow, knocking your black lion to the ground.
6.30 pm

You choose to have a piece of fish, rice and vegetables instead of pizza and coke. Your black lion turns its back and flees, but will be back to fight another day.
When you become aware of this fierce battle that is raging within your heart, it becomes easier to take action on a regular basis. By doing so you will feed your golden lion and over time give it the strength it needs to triumph.

Lesson :

(1) Visualise your battle against negative thinking and procrastination as a battle between two lions that live within your heart.

(2) Make the decision to feed your golden lion by thinking positive thoughts and taking consistent action towards achieving your goals.

(3) Enjoy watching as your golden lion grows stronger and ultimately conquers your black lion once and for all.

The Power Of Patience

In our hectic, quick-fix society one of the hardest things to accept is that it takes time to achieve our most important life goals.

The concept of patience seems to have somehow been lost in a world that tells us, "We should have it all" and "We should have it now!"

As you work towards achieving your goals, there will be times when you become impatient because things are taking longer than you expected.

When you are frustrated and impatient, remember this important fact:

Consider the following picture:

It shows a man who is on the way to achieving his goal. But the journey is taking longer than he expected. He is impatient and is now faced with an important decision. He can:
  1. Give up and stay where he is
  2. Change direction and take a new road
  3. Just keep walking

As you can see, only one of these options will lead him to his goal.

When you become impatient, take a moment to refocus on your goal and remind yourself how far you have already come. Check that you are still facing in the right direction and keep moving forward.

Just as a building is constructed one brick at a time, you will reach your goal one step at a time as long as you don't stop moving forward or change directions.

Don't let impatience rob you of your ultimate victory.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, "Patience and fortitude conquer all things"

Lesson :

(1) Realise that important life goals often take longer than we anticipate.

(2) Don't let impatience rob you of your goal.

(3) Focus on your goal, make sure you are facing the right direction and just keep moving forward.

Wise decision Kal.nod

I think procrastination is one of ur worst enemies on these exams. Leads u nowhere. Its only a step back ward.
When u've been studying intensely for a month and a half, delayin the exam can be a big let down. It can really hurt ur prep badly. U start feelin like u have to do it all over again.
And of course u r not going in blind, u hav plenty of accurate tools available to assess ur level of preparation right uptil exam day. So there's really nothing to fear.
All ur decisions will be very informed.

About the Step2ck...I think it can easily be done in 2 months if u work as hard as u r for Step1. Infact its got less material to go through than Step1. Much less memorization. Its all about knowin some basic concepts, learnin Ist choice investigations and treatment modalities, and gettin a feel for the question patterns. They never ask u outta this world stuff, mostly variations on common disease processes. Gotta know em thoroughly. Overall very much doable in 2 months as compared to say Step1.

And good luck the rest of the way, I'm certain u'll have nothin less than a superlative 99!smiling facesmiling facenod

hi kal

i don't know who is the person in your new avatar... but when i saw it for the first time i couldn't stop laughing... and the first thought that came to my mind was.... look what USMLE has done to kal.grin

  #312

Thanks Genbot....

The insight u gave abt Step2 is very comforting.

I am gonna give my best in these 4 motnhs and Halla Bol on the 2009 match...

And even if my step 1 was rescheduled also... how can those 15 days i lost affect me so much so that i give up or lose faith in myself...utter rubbish.....

I gotta do wats in my hands best... Work Hard... And leave the rest unto God....

He shud be impressed enough to grant me a 99 or residency match or watever....

No point in thinking abt several steps forward...Take step by step approach...

I know if i can ace this exam... i can easili ace the other two also....

So come on Kal..There is no stopping you.... ITS YOU WHO HAS STOPPED YOURSELF.

You got such a sweet bunch of frends here... You can rely on them blindly to give u the best advice... So now go for it..... Give it ur best.....

Never mind if u score badli in nbmes or watever... Its your protective shield to let u know that where u gotta improve on... IN case urealli are not prepared for the exam on March 31st... then no worries.... I tell u Kal................It may be the best thing that can happen to you in such a situation...

Just dont forget these 2 key points:

FOCUS

INTENSITY

and there is your 99 waiting to be hugged by you................

Hey hey....... Iam coming wait.....I 'll give u the warmest hug................

watever that means... I love 99.... Iam gonna get it for myself and also for my love who sent me these wonderful inspiring emails wich i just copy pasted here.

so you see, i don't know the difference between chorea and choreoform movements, and i am giving my test on March 29th. two days before your test. is that overconfidence, or desparation, or sheer stupidity. i don't know. i stopped thinking about it. just sitting and studying, kind of numb to the enviroment around me, no sensory input, except for my eyes reading the text in frontshaking head kind of trance

Dude

You need to get out of that trance and start using your mind in reflexes. I have been through that feeling and really i know what it feels like to be in that place. All you have to do is to concerntrate on doing more questions and as many as you can. Cos they will give you a faster revision than anything else.

So need help or anything just ask

ok .
