Hi there buddies, Hope everything's well with you guys. Here I am ... And here is my call to all Usmle Step 1 prep beginners who aim to write the exam in March End. Come…Lets prepare together sharing the highs and lows during the preparation, the mood swings, few motivational comments , few Inspirational messages , Study Tips, HY concepts and what not . Ok. Here is my view on things.. All I deduce about this USMLE thing…...... after reading all the posts on the worldwide web is that, ITS A GAME. And Of course I AM HERE TO WIN…. THERE ARE SOME SET RULES ( The Exam Format, Different Question Types, Time restrictions , Test taking strategies etc etc ) , and YOU NEED TO PLAY ACCORDING TO THE RULES IN ORDER TO EMERGE AS A WINNER. (Should I also mention what the game is all about or ask you guys to look back at your First 2 years of Medical school – THE BASIC SCIENCES.) Well… Positive attitude and approach is what makes the game playable, the win achievable , though it demands Focus, Concentration, Determination, Dedication, Perseverance and above all, COURAGE and ROCK SOLID BELIEF IN ONE SELF. And here I feel is the need to quote Dr.Steven Daughtery: “ Believing that you will succeed is the first step in making it so. You need to believe that you can do something if you are ever going to give it your best effort. Hope keeps us going, and gives us the confidence to see a task through. But a positive attitude, by itself, is not enough. Simply wanting something does not make it happen. Success comes from using that confidence in the plans we make and the actions we take. Success does not come to those who wish for it, but to those who work for it. Success requires more than a positive attitude. Hope is not a strategy. Wishing is not a plan. Most of the people who take the USMLE are as smart and intelligent as you are. Preparation and effort are the only things that will give you an edge in this competition. Confidence only matters when it is based on a realistic foundation of learning, study, and practice. Realistic preparation depends on facing your fears and targeting your deficiencies. The best exam preparation does not treat all material as the same, but allows you to focus on the topics and concepts on which you need the most help. The power of positive thinking is the power to succeed. By making a clear study plan and sticking to it, you can harness that power to propel you to your goal. Believe that you will succeed, but also believe that your own efforts are a key part of that eventual success. Confidence, by itself does not win, but does help those who help themselves.” Here is what I learnt reading through several USMLE Exam experiences. And I take the liberty to quote them as it is sometimes….So no copyright issues with me . Becos I got these wonderful advices from a wide range of sources , I can’t credit each and every person for their invaluable advice. - Step 1 of the USMLE is a fair exam and it really did distribute questions pretty evenly throughout all of the medical school basic sciences.( though there is high predominance of Patho-physiology )
- Step 1 usually does not ask ‘what’, it asks ‘why’
- There is only one question format for USMLE Step 1: "Single question best answer".
- It is not really a test that rewards the best of memorizers (and I’m one of them). It is an exam that requires understanding.
- One purpose of Step 1 is to see how adept you are at taking partial information and, based on that, figuring out an answer you consider a high probability response. You can't do that with MEMORIZED material, but you can do it using material that you have LEARNED.
My overall idea is that the score you get is strongly influenced by how badly you want to achieve the best. In other terms, the more you are committed to score 99, the more you wanted and do what you have to do, the more it is likely you are going to achieve your goal. It sounds pretty obvious, but talking to other who took the exams and did not do well, I figured out that it is not a matter of intelligence or being more or less smart.. it is matter of having passion, commitment and being methodical in approach to the prep as well as the examination. - You are only limited by what you think. If i told you that you could never fail what would you do? Do not get frustrated easily, life has just started for you, take one step at a time and enjoy it.
Step 1 Exam, per se, is similar to medical practice: - You must find key information
- The information you need may be buried
- There are distractions
- There is time pressure
- You must use probabilities to make decisions
- You'll never know it all Situations won't exactly fit what you've learned
MY PREP JOURNAL: So here are my details : An IMG from India . Graduated few months back. Aiming for Residency Match 2009 . Interested in Internal Medicine Program . Didn’t write any of the Steps yet. Step 1 scheduled on 31st March 2008. Target score in mind: 99 and nothing else PREP TIME : 8 weeks/56 days ( starting from today ) 12-14 hrs Full Time Study per day. Regular Physical Activity. 6-8 hrs of Continuous Sleep. PREP MATERIALS : It’s all about the resources that you use and the amount of concentration that you have when you sit down on your desk and study. Isnt it ? - Kaplan Lecture Notes ( All except Pathology )
- Kaplan Video Lectures ( Except Gross Anatomy/Micro/Pharmac/Pathology )
- Goljan Pathology Audio and 500 pg Notes along with his slides & his Comprehensive Path Exam and Web path for Patho slides , CTs, MRIs.
- HY Cell & Molecular biology, Gross Anatomy, Neuro anatomy
- Kaplan Qbook
- Kaplan Qbank ( 2400 Qs )
- UW Qbank ( 2025 Qs ) = High priority
- NBME Forms – Two out of Four ( Most probably Form 3,4 to assess my preparation in the last 30 days or so of my prep )
- USMLE / ECFMG Step 1 CD
PREP PLAN : By setting such a short concentrated period of time for my prep, very less time u seee..., In addition to studying hard… I need to study Smart. I plan to read the following, ( pretty easy to jot down , isn’t it…. ) Kaplan Lecture Notes = 3x First Aid = 2x UW Qbank = 2x Kaplan Qbook = 1x Kaplan Qbank = ( as many Qs as possible ) NBME = 2 forms online + 2 forms offline I shall use Kaplan Video lectures only for the 1st Read of the following subjects only –Physiology Biochemistry Behavioral Sciences Neuro-anatomy Immunology. I shall skip watching the Microbiology/Pathology/Pharmacology/Gross Anatomy video lectures , as per the unanimous advice of most Usmle Takers, and yeah also due to the lack of time. I will be using the ever dependable SQ3R approach ( See below for further details ) when it comes to learning and understanding the materials in the first reading. Then, I will build on that with each read. Recalling and Reviewing .So, I will learn the subject/concept by actively working with it while reading. Repeat Repeat Repeat ACTIVELY WORKING WITH THE SUBJECTS and stressing MORE on UNDERSTANDING rather than to MEMORIZING the materials. I am planning to do as many questions as I can afford to do during the whole prep time of 56 days. DOING AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE So , Ladies and Gentle men…………………. Boys and Girls…………………….. Let me start with all your best wishes ……………………

INCREASING TEXTBOOK READING COMPREHENSION BY USING SQ3R : Textbooks are often read in the same way pleasure books are read “begin with the first page of the chapter and read to the end of the chapter, without stopping. While this method is fine for novels and mysteries, it is not likely to result in the level of understanding and retention needed for most textbooks. Using SQ3R provides a different method of reading textbooks that will most likely enhance understanding and retention of material. Its not a quicker way to read a chapter in a textbook but it is likely to reduce the amount of time one will need to spend studying the material immediately prior to the test. This is so because more time is spent actually understanding the chapter when it is read initially. Study time then becomes deepening your understanding of the material. This program will explain the steps of the SQ3R process and help you decide when to use this method. OVERVIEW OF SQ3R As the acronym SQ3R suggests, the process has five steps. They are: Survey Question Read Recite Review The next few pages of this program will explain what is involved in completing each of these five steps and will help you make your reading process more active. SURVEY This step helps you gather the information necessary to focus on the chapter and formulate questions for yourself as you read the chapter. Its not necessary to have answers to your questions at this step of the process. The answers will come later in the process. This step should take no more than 5 - 10 minutes but is very important. Read the title This helps your brain begin to focus on the topic of the chapter. Read the introduction and/or summary This orients you to how this chapter fits the author’s purposes. It also provides you with an overview of the author’s statement of the most important points. Read each boldface heading and subheading This helps you create a framework for the chapter in your mind before you begin to read. This framework provides a structure for the thoughts and details to come. Review any graphics Charts, maps, diagrams, pictures, and other visual aids are there to make a point. Publishers will not include these items in the book unless they are deemed to significantly add to the text. Review any reading aids in the chapter This includes italics, chapter objectives, definitions and study questions at the end of the chapter. These aids are there to help you sort, comprehend and remember. Use them to your advantage. QUESTION Now that you have surveyed the entire chapter to build a framework for understanding the chapter, its time to begin the reading process. This step and the next two, read and recite, are repeated over and over as you read the chapter. Turn boldface headings into one or more questions and write down your question on the left third of a piece of paper. As you read this section, you will be looking for the answer to your questions. For example, if you are reading a book to help you improve your study skills and the heading is use a regular study area the questions you might ask are why should I have a regular study area and where should my regular study area be located? Why do I need to take time to do this step? When your mind is actively searching for answers to questions, it becomes engaged in the learning process. This will help you remember and understand the information. READ Reading the section fills in the information around the mental structures you have been building by surveying the chapter and developing questions about the section. Read one section as a time As you read the section, look for the answers to your questions and jot them down, in your own words, on the right two-thirds of your piece of paper. Add more questions, if necessary A single question is probably adequate for a section that is only a few paragraphs; however, for longer sections, you may find that you need to add a question or two. Don t get bogged down with the details Well-written textbooks often provide examples to further explain the main ideas. As you read the section, try to separate the details from the main ideas. Use the details to help you understand the main ideas but dont expect yourself to memorize every detail provided in the chapter. RECITE Reciting material as you go retrains your mind to concentrate and learn as it reads. When do you recite? At the end of each section of the chapter. How do you recite? Look at the question(s) you wrote down before you read the section. Cover your answers with a piece of paper and see if you can answer the questions from memory. What if you cant recall the answers to your questions? Reread the section or the part of the section that has to do with that question. When you can answer your question(s) about this section, go back to step two, “question. †Develop and write down your question(s) for this section, read the section and then recite again. Proceed through the chapter repeating these three steps. REVIEW The review step helps you refine our mental organization of the material in the chapter and begin to build memory. We learn through repetition. This step provides another opportunity for repetition of the material and therefore will enhance our recall of the information. How do you review? Once you have finished reading the entire chapter using the survey, question, read and recite steps, go back over all your questions. Cover the answers to the questions you have developed and written down and see if you can still recite them. What if some of the answers have been forgotten? Reread that section of the chapter to refresh your memory, recite the answer after you have written it down and then continue your review process SQ3R REVIEW Now that you have learned about the five steps of the SQ3R process, see if you answer these questions: What are the five steps of the SQ3R process? What do you need to do to complete each of the five steps of the process? If you have successfully answered these two questions, you are ready to continue with this program. If not, you may wish to go back to the beginning and review one or more steps in the process again. This is exactly what you should do in the review step for reading a chapter in a textbook. WHEN TO USE SQ3R No technique is useful 100% of the time. Now that u have learned another study strategy, it is important to decide when to use it. Different study strategies work best in different situations. When should you use it? SQ3R is an excellent technique to use with textbooks that provide a lot of information and require you to learn the material in depth. Textbooks in many disciplines such as biology, psychology, and sociology fall into this category. ACTION PLAN Now that you have learned about SQ3R, survey, question, read, recite and review, the next step is to incorporate this into your study strategies Plan ahead and start early. SQ3R takes time and is not a strategy that can be employed or used effectively the night before a test. [/quote]

Day Zero of my prep plan went on well with me getting an idea of how this kaplan series looks like while reading and how does it facilitate retaining of the subject....Best books to follow the SQ3R principle ....Studied Physio and Behav Sci only..Cudnt complete Biochemistry portion planned for Day Zero. .But anyways Day Zero never counts....Isnt it. ( I wish there were a few more smileys to emote exactly what i feel ) I can make up for it today by studying with a bit more focus and concentration. I forgot to tell you guys how i study...Here it is.... I prepare a plan of action for a day in the morning before gymming. Turning the pages of the study material i set as a goal for today, I get an idea of how many actual pages to study and how many questions-related pages are included.. With this overview i re-adjust and re-organise my goal if it is over ambitious. But i recommend to keep it a touch-ambitious cos that is what will push you to study harder on a particular day. So having done that...I freshen up after gymming for 60-90 minutes...Have my VERY IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY aka BREAKFAST... which will constitute abt 1/3rd calories for the day.( Total Calorie Goal = 1800 Cal/day , dieting .....trying to get lean u seeee ). And regarding Diet Care....I make it a point to eat 200 Cal foods every 2 hours for the rest of the day..to keep my glucose levels stable and so that i dont distract my study with hunger/lethargy. Ok enough of eating business now....I sit down and study after my breakfast. Before i start studying a topic/chapter...I go thru the same topic/chapter in First Aid , so that i can very easily make out what is high yield and what is not about a certain topic....and also get a few more view-points into the same old concept { like different graphical presentations, other ways to ask the same concept etc etc and also i heard First Aid has a few more HY points about each concept } .. ..which will orient me to concentrate that much more on the HY concepts in a chapter...Talking of studying smart... Very Important point to note here is : If i study the way i mentioned in the above paragraph, I actually make very less notes when i use UW Qbank cos many points are covered in First Aid which otherwise are not covered in Kaplan. So this should help me save time from making huge notes when i try to attempt the UW Qbank and also mark a lesser number of questions on it for future reference and also yeah score higher...Isnt that i cool strategy,,,, .... Thanks to people who shared this with me on other forums. My Goal is to read my First Read as my Final Read....I tend to perform much much better under pressure...This attribute of me is what i could make out through out my sojourn in the medical school. Chalo lets starttttttttttttttttttttttt....to win this wonderful day............ 4th Feb : Day 1 Physiology: 1. Respiratory physiology 2. Peripheral Circulation 3. Gastrointestinal Physiology 4. Cell Physiology & Body Compartments 5. Excitable tissue Biochemistry : 6. Overview of Energy Metabolism 7. Carbohydrate Metabolism 8. Lipid Metabolism 9. Enzymes Behavioral Sciences : 10. Human Sexuality 11. Sleep disorders 12. Patient Autonomy Competence Microbiology: 13. General Microbiology 14. Staphylococcus Streptococcus Bacilllus Listeria Corynebacterium Mycobacterium Nocardia Clostridium Other Anerobic Gm +ve bacteria PS : This prep plan is my Own Personal Plan , not to be followed only becos it sounds so very well organised or so easy to deal with on paper...Its a real challenge for oneself to actually live up to it, which requires a great deal of motivation, desire and passion... Its only posted in order to get me going and get baluable suggestions from experienced Good Samaritans of this wonderful site ( I am posting on this site only cos of some of these indispensable human species being alive on these forums ) and also feedbacks and helpful company of fellow Step1 takers in march. You can follow it at your own risk but I am no way responsible if it doesnt crack USMLE Step 1 for you... I suggest u deduce the best plan that works for you based on these sort of prep journals or exam experiences. Thanks to all for providing feedback and support. It really matters to me a lot.

Hi mileee.... Cold got worser....Goddd damnn these viruses.... Yeah here is my view on ur question: PS: Everything said with a smile on my face....Pls dont misread/misinterpret/ read between the lines. Actualli wat we all can together agree upon is.... Everyone can post their respective study schedules in their respective prep journals and ask any queries or questions in their respective journals....and since we are a group of 5 now and stil counting....any one of us or infact all of us shal llook into each others prep journal and accordingli anser one's queries or offer study tips or motivate or cheer u up or have a casual chat abt anything etc etc... So that will make each one's prep journal their own territory where they can find their own pledges / study schedules/ oath to complete a fixed portion / their own review how the day went / and lots of motivational msgs from other people.... For example i shall look in to papio, determined08,and milee and anshus prep journals daili when i log in , and furnish any advice or anser any query or just have a simple motivational chat.... The fact that somebody else's personal prep / study schedule posts are in our post shall make the most important motive of a prep journal overlooked. and that is a Personal Prep Journal... Isnt it. ? Every friend of mine i made here has 100% right to correct me if i am wrong.

Hi kalyann, Its nice to see your prep journ'l and encouraging words. Good initiation. I became a part of it now on. I would like to share few things that i came to know in my prep. Acc to someone's advice, i read the First 50 pgs of Kaplan QBook, its really fetching, with this i have been realizing many errors in my prep. It says " When students are left on their own, they will focus on the material they like the most, instead of focusing on high yielding topics. Which exactly what i did ! When i started doing UW i came across many qs from the topics i neglected. I started to focus on them now atleast. In UW, i created tests with all the main div and all the subdiv - max no of qs 50 per one hour. I observed 12 to 13q /50 are from Pathology ( including pathophysio), Pharmac- 9/50, physio 5-6/50, remaining all subs are covered b/n the numbers 1 to4 . Onething i observed is Physio qs are most of the time, everything about graphs, formulas, calculations. STATISTICS is big time. I can for sure say onething that...everthing is written beautifully in first 50 pgs of kaplan Qbook. While doing the qs, just go through the pattern of qs and different types of qs explained in it. It aids in understanding the qns well.
