woman taking a drug to delay onset preterm labor, after first dose, tremulousness in her hands, which receptor is involved?

from what i got, the drug is probably magnesium sulfate, the answer that i got is beta2, but from my search online, it is more likely to be NMDA

so anyone knows?

why do you think its NMDA?? Like which drug would produce teh effects of enhanced NMDA receptor activity.

I normally stay away from NBME questions unless the Form is Specified like i have done form 1 and 3 so i attempt only those questions.

Sounds like it's asking for a tocolytic. Beta agonist like Terbutaline which has more selectivity for beta 2. Calcium channel blocker Nifedipine - most likely used and mostly preferred as a tocolytic. Was that an option?

They informed that the drug given induced tremors in the hands of the patient and then asked that which of the following receptors where involved.

Beta 2
Muscurinic
Dopa
NDMA
Alpha 1

The answer is Beta though Summer feels it should be NMDA so we are discussing it.

If tremors are involved it should be Beta 2. What is the thought process behind NMDA?

its beta 2

so is the drug "magnesium sulfate?"

from what i found:

Magnesium sulfate is used to treat pre-eclampsia in laboring women
Magnesium sulfate can also delay labor in the case of premature labor, to delay Preterm birth

so i googled it, and i got this on top of the page,

http://rsx.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/1/1/2...

"Magnesium Sulfate Treatment Decreases N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Binding in the Rat Brain: An Autoradiographic Study"

that is why i am asking

read the question first....they are asking for mangement of preterm labour plus the drug tht causes tremors.......
it is simply ritonadrine....beta 2 agonist ....with most common S/E tremors
does Magnesium sulfate hav tremors as its side effect....??
so therz no ques on which receptors they act....

My thoughts exactly.

well, "Magnesium sulfate can also delay labor in the case of premature labor, to delay Preterm birth"

so why is it wrong to use magnesium sulfate?

Dude/dudette does magnesium sulfate cause tremors ??

simply because the skeletal muscles have beta 2 receptors ,their stimulation cause tremor, which is a well known side effect in case of asthmatic patient with beat2 agonist ttt.
