According to the NRMP website you do not have to be ECFMG certified to to go through the match, but you have to complete all the exam requirements for certification. (i.e pass USMLE step 1, 2CK & 2 CS)

" 2.3 Verification of Credentials of Independent Applicants

The credentials of independent applicants will be verified by the NRMP as summarized below.

The NRMP will verify the credentials of independent applicants described in Sections 2.2.2 (a), (b), and (c) with their respective schools. The NRMP will verify Fifth Pathway program enrollment with the respective LCME-accredited medical school for applicants described in 2.2.2 (e) who have completed, or are in the process of completing, such a program. Independent applicants described in Section 2.2.2(d) must submit either:

A notarized copy of a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. jurisdiction; or
An Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ("ECFMG") candidate number. The NRMP will verify that the applicant has completed the necessary requirements for ECFMG certification.
The NRMP will notify all independent applicants whose credentials cannot be verified and will provide them an opportunity to substantiate their credentials. All verifications must be completed before the rank order list certification deadline."...

Thanx but it says "All verifications must be completed before the rank order list certification deadline."...

This is what the FAQ page on the NRMP website says; http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/faq/ind_apps_faq.ht... I am a foreign medical school graduate. If I have not received my ECFMG® Certification when the rank order list opens can I still enter my rank order list?
Yes, you can. If the NRMP receives notification from ECFMG® that you have completed your exam requirements for certification by the rank order list deadline, you will be included in the Match. If we have not received ECFMG® confirmation, NRMP will withdraw you from the match shortly after the rank order list deadline and your rank order list will NOT be used in the match. You will receive an e-mail notification from the NRMP if this occurs.
What does ECFMG Status NOT VERIFIED mean?
After the initial registration deadline of December 1st, the NRMP contacts ECFMG® periodically before the rank order list deadline to verify whether graduates/students of international medical schools and Fifth Pathway program applicants have passed the required exams. If your status is NOT VERIFIED, ECFMG® has not yet confirmed that you have passed all exams necessary for ECFMG® certification. To be able to participate in the NRMP Match, ECFMG® must verify your exam status, NOT your ECFMG® certification status by the rank order list deadline.

Wonderful Now the confusion is over.Thanx DrS

Although.... his credentials have not been VERIFIED by his medical school.... therefore he has not completed ALL the requirements for certification (Step 1, 2ck, 2cs and VERIFICATION of credentials)... how can he participate on the match if his credentials are not verified? he might not even have credentials so the NRMP can not take that risk!

The NRMP website clearly states:

The NRMP will verify that the applicant has completed the NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS for ECFMG certification.

(which we all know not only includes exams!, otherwise I would have been certified since june last year and I was not certified until november because I had to wait for my verification of credentials!!)

NRMP match agreement clearly says:

The credentials of independent applicants will be verified by the NRMP as summarized below.

An Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ("ECFMG") candidate number. The NRMP will verify that the applicant has completed the necessary requirements for ECFMG certification.

NRMP match agreement clearly states:

All verifications must be completed before the rank order list certification deadline."... Meaning we should be certified or have completed ALL requirements for certification (including exams and verification of credentials) before February 27!!!

Read #7 and #8, which includes:

"To be able to participate in the NRMP Match, ECFMG® must verify your exam status, NOT your ECFMG® certification status by the rank order list deadline. "

The NRMP website certainly contains some contradictory information. The match agreement section of the website states that "The NRMP will verify that the applicant has completed the necessary requirements for ECFMG certification." This obviously implies that you have to have completed the exams as well as have your credentials verified to be able to participate in the match. However, the FAQ section of the website states the following;

I am not ECFMG certified as yet and I definitely will not be in time for this years match, but my ECFMG status on NRMP says "verified". I guess this seems to be a controversial issue and only someone from NRMP can clarify it!

I called NRMP and they said only exams not credentials. and verification of credentials are for AMGs not for IMGs.

  #13

Well thank you Anzar for sorting that out!

Seems tricky but I guess that if they said so they said so.... my logic tells me that they could not match someone that doesn't have credentials yet because what if you match and you are not able to get your diploma before your start date?? don't you guys think it is a tricky issue? And how come someone in the NRMP said that they don't verifiy credentials from IMG's if there is a whole issue about that in the match agreement (2.3 Verification of Credentials of Independent Applicants.... where it CLEARLY STATES:

The NRMP will notify all independent applicants (THAT'S US!) whose credentials cannot be verified and will provide them an opportunity to substantiate their credentials. All verifications must be completed before the rank order list certification deadline.
) ....

something is not adding up here! and I don't buy it! I guess the person you talked to was not very informed...sometimes they don't know nothing about IMG's and they only care for AMG's I guess talking to an ECFMG representative would be more helpful!

And about the FAQ questions, they give info about not completing the exams because I guess that is the most common cause for not being in time for the match but I bet not having your creds ready should also be an issue!!...

I'm not saying that you need to be ECFMG certified fo participate in the match but I'm saying that yo should have your credentials verified before ROL deadline to participate in the match!! Usually after your credentials are verified it takes up to 2 weeks to get your certificate sooo if the NRMP know that your creds are verified it doesn't matter if you are not certified by the deadline because they know you will be by match time... same think with exam completion... 2w after that you get your certificare and it's just a matter of paperwork at ECFMG once you have everything ready... it does make sence right? And I don't say that the NRMP match agreement says that!! Remember that the match is ruled by this agreement... so I believe the agreement more than some person that works at the NRMP and might not be very informed about IMG's issues!

This is just my two cents, but I think it would be good to verify this issue for future applicants.

Check this out: (taken from the NRMP match agreement which we all had to agree to when we applied for it)

Section 2.4.2 Withdrawal of Applicants by the NRMP:

At any time the NRMP may withdraw from the Matching Program any applicant who falls into one or more of the following categories:

(a) Independent applicants whose credentials cannot be verified by the NRMP, as described in Section 2.3.

You see!! It is listed as the number one cause to be withdrawed from the match by the NRMP!!!

I guess there is no doubt here... you need to have your creds verified as well as all your exams to participate in the match and the last opportunity to have all this ready is ROL deadline february 27!!

2.3 Verification of Credentials of Independent Applicants

The credentials of independent applicants will be verified by the NRMP as summarized below.

  • An Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ("ECFMG") candidate number. The NRMP will verify that the applicant has completed the necessary requirements for ECFMG certification.

    Taken from the ECFMG website:

To be certified by ECFMG, you MUST pass a series of exams; you MUST also provide ECFMG with copies of your medical education credentials, which ECFMG will verify directly with your medical school

For me it is crystal clear now guys, let me know what you think.

Even I talked to ECFMg they said we dont need to be certified just clear Step1/step2ck and cs.But for sure before starting residency we must be certified

      #18

I did not say that you have to be ECFMG certified..... I said that you need your credentials verified and you need to have ALL your requirements for ECFMG certification (which include not only exams but also credentials) ready by ROL certification deadline!! nod It clearly states so in the match agreement!

I agree one hundred percent with GLOMD - it's logical. What happens if you can't get your credentials verified before Residency starts. I don't think NRMP would want to take that risk. They'd rather accept ROL's from applicants who have not only passed Steps one, CK and Cs but ALSO have their credentials verified before the deadline. If an applicant has all these things ready then ECFMG certification will get done within two weeks - it makes sense to me!
