HPV infection promotes the outgrowth of the basal layer, increasing the number of prickle cells. This causes the skin to thicken and promote the production of keratin, thus causing epithelial spikes to form. Serotypes 6 and 11 are the most common and benign whereas serotypes 16 and 18 are strongly associated with CIN.

The new recombinant vaccine contains capsids of serotypes 6,11,16 and 18. The treatment for HPV is usually cryotherapy or imiquod.
