Hello!

I don't know wether you know or not , but after adjustment of status for green card in US , for the first or second year the applicant has sth called EAD (Employment authorization document) , I want to know :

1-How often do program directors know about this?

2-Is this the same as GC for residency match?(Actually I asked a layer and she told me I have to ask the programs directly because she didn't have opinion about this matter in medical residency programs) .I mean when there is a program that only sponsors J visa (that an EAD holder can't take J visa ) or exclusively GC , can an EAD holder apply for that program?

3-In this situation what should he/she fill in the form for visa status in ERAS(GC ? or ...)

4-As you know EAD is valid just for one year and in very few cases the applicant may be rejected for GC so he/she will lose his/her EAD position.Could this be a reason that a program does not accept an EAD holder??

Thank you very much for your response.

Isn't this like a pre-green card? If you can work on it, you don't have an issue. If you are rejected for a green card, then you apply for a J1 visa, right?

p.s. I changed the subject you had so that similar topics would show under the search function and other answers might be there.

Dear all, I have similar question like nightflight.
I m not a green card holder and I am not in the process of applying for it. But I have my EAD according to my husband's visa status ( United nation staff).
I have no idea whether I m eligible to apply for programs not sponsoring H1 or even whether this card is valid for applying residency or not.
Please help me if you know something about EAD.
Regards,

EAD is a document that SHOWS your right to work and pay taxes in the US.

it is only a PROOF of what you already have (certain types of visa give you right to work, but you have to apply for this "right" every year or 2, otherwise your employer is in trouble if your EAD is not up to date).

it is not a GC and not even a pre-GC. if you are eligible to work you have your SS card with words "eligible for work with permission from INS" or something along those lines, and your EAD is that permission.

and without SS # + EAD you are not able to pay taxes (and your employer can not hire you).

I am not saying it is not done, but if you want to have your life easier you do not want to try outsmart the system, especially if your future carrer depend ot it.

once you have your GC, you do not need EAD, all you need to do is show your GC.

do you need to change your visa status from one kind to another? i don't know, and the best way to to contact your program.

but do not be confused, EAD is only pertinent to your right to work, not your immigration status
