Since u've signed the contract, it's indeed hard to back out now, as the hospital can put everything under the sun and u run risk of ending ur career as a doc in USA.

I would try to contact the PD and make an excuse to let him know u do not betray this deal out of future concerns.

It all depends on how ur PD will react. It's case-by-case.

First thing u need to understand is that u are NOT the only one the program offered prematch.. they have a pool of applicants form which u accepted... and if a place is better for ur acreer, you should atleast give it a try... u could have cancelled and emailed all other programs as soon as u signed the prematch.. to avoid such a confusion.. but anyways.. i am no one to advise you on this

so my thoughts on ur question.... you can always try and tell the PD.. that u have some presonal reasons.. and have decided to go for match or try other options .... as you have more interviews n want to try ur chances in some other area (e.g illinois) or.... u can tell him that u were offered another premacth by a place where u prefer to live for some reason

Also.. generally they are pretty okay with it.. since it is a premacth,... if you withdraw.. i dont beleive they can go to NRMP to bar you from particpating in match; as u never went to NRMP.. so i dont see how someone can come after you.. but yes.. it is is unethical to do such a thing.. but people do it all the time.. we had a few examples in our program.. people not showing u after match and prematch also.....

so it wont affect u much.. just tell them.. but make sure that u sign contract with this hospital for sure.. as it will be stupid to have none in hand later

Also PDs in one region tend to know each other..so be careful if this other program is in the same city or state.. i heard my PD mentioning an email from another PD abt a guy who accepted, refused and then accepted a prematch somewhere in Harrisburg.. and the email was just a warning stating that he has signed prematch now so anyone else please do not offer him a position or something like taht

I know some people here may not agree to above.. but these are my thoughts.. good luck.

Yes, noticed that PD from one city tend to know other PD's from the area in one of my interviews.

I got a prematch at my number one place, but I already signed another prematch offer. It was so easy to turn it down. I would never jeopardize my future....Im happy with my decision I got a position and that was my goal !! Do not let greed get in your way!!!
Feel happy that you secure your position for next years and think in all the people that would die for being in your place.....lol

this year is strange! the number of prematches increased dramatically! I believe in near future PREMATCH will become the major way of hiring the residency applicants!! and only huge names like MGH, Yale...will remain in match! hahahaha

nayentika.. for some reason i cannot reply to ur PM.. anyways

I am sure things will work out.

Make sure you have signed the prematch at this other place first. Always remmeber, the program is doing itself a favour by giving u a prematch and ofcourse you also..

.... so do what is best for you.. what will suit you.

good Luck
