Plasmids can be distinguished from bacterial chromosomes because only plasmids...

A. are not required by the cell

nod A is correct (not required by the cell). Plasmids are extrachromosomal segments of DNA. They do not encode essential genes and are dispensable. Bacterial chromosomes are indispensable.
