A newly developed compound is hown to have a broad range of antiviral activity and is capable of inhibiting numerous types of RNA and DNA viruses including those with and without envelopes. When the compound is used in studies involving influenza B virus, no viral synthesis is detected, although viral mRNA is detected in low amounts. Which of the following antiviral agents has a mode of action similar to this compound and would inhibit a similar step in replication? A. Acyclovir B. Amantadine C. Azidothymidine D. Interferon alpha E. Ribavirin

D.Interferon alpha.I read it somewhere that INF-a inhibits viral replication.I'm not sure.

D is the correct answer (interferon alpha). Treatment with this agent inhibits a step in virus replication, such as protein synthesis, that is common to most viruses. The compound is probably an inducer of interferon-alpha. Influenza and other single stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses are sensitive to interferon because they produce a double-stranded RNA intermediate during replication of the genome. The double-stranded RNA induces interferon and also activates the antiviral state in an interferon treated cell. The double-stranded RNA activates protein kinase R (PKR), an inhibitor of protein synthesis, and a ribonuclease to degrade mRNA.

Damn I chose Ribavirin on the basis that the question said " although viral mRNA is detected in low amounts" which means INF Alpha was not the drug as it preferentially goes after viral mRNA < ref Katzung Board Review pg 418. So i asssumed that mRNA is spared.
