Check with ECFMG - they are the ones with the real answers.

You have 2 year home residence requirement when you are at least partially funded by governmental source. If you have private funding, then you will not be subject to 2 year home residence.

If your position/skills fall under DOS skills list for your country, even though you are self funded you will be subject to 2 yr HRR. The skills list is available at http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/87383...

I was on a self funded J1 visa last year, you are not subject to 2 year home requirement

does self funded mean u dont get paid? coz the gov visa website just mentions buying your own insurance.

bbb, I was told that the research position with the university has nothing to do with ECFMG...so the J1 would be sponsored by the instituition and not ECFMG. Does that change anything? and so now research on J1 which is "self funded" would be like volunteer work on J1??

No clue, I don't have persons on a self funded J-1 research visa.

Hey bbb,

Any IMG, graduating in the months of Feb/March/April- can have any chance of getting into residency the same year and that also on H1B visa ??- assuming he does everything else just right and in time.
