i have a question guys about the scramble , there is always unfilled positions every year or not necessary, second on the scramble day they fill all the unfilled positions or some positions remain unfilled ...one more thing what is this surgery preliminary... thank you for any explanation

There is no guarantee that there will be unfilled positions but from what i gather that there had always been some. On scramble days not ALL of the positions get filled but i think most of them do. There are always some open positions available later on, sometimes more come out because some body couldn't join or left a place. these can be followed on at matchAresident.com (i think). I know absolutely about one of my friend who couldnt match, got GC meanwhile and got a position later on in newyork (i think in june, july or august). (i dont remember the program name). Surgery preliminary positions are PGY1 and some PGY2 spots which are available as one year contract , meant for preliminary training for surgical specialties residency like anesthesia. from what i gather they are easier to get then the categorical surgery. There is a slight chance of getting a categorical position from PGY2 onwards depending upon availability of an empty seat otherwise people switch to another specialty like internal medicine residency.
