My understanding of a second look is that you go back to check on something about the program that you may have missed in the IV, or to help with deciding whether how to rank the program, but this should NOT affect how the program will rank you. Now it seems that everyone is scrambling for second looks hoping they can get a prematch or that the program will rank them high if they go back, and some people do claim that they get prematches when they go back. I have read extensively about the programs I interviewed in and have asked and observed as much as I could during the IV day. I am genuinely interested in some of the programs I interviewed in but I cannot go for a second look. I am spending other people's money for this match and it will be inconsiderate of me to spend more. Moreover I don't think I need to go back because I feel I know enough about the programs I interviewed in to decide how to rank them. Am I the only one who thinks it unfair if programs should prematch or rank people higher if they go for a second look?
