Hi friends.

I completed my MBBS in 2004 and worked in a hospital for 2 years in India(general practitioner)
.Now i wish to take USMLE exams but i am very apprehensive(heard that old IMGS dont get into rsidency prog) about getting success becoz i wont be ready fr the match before 2010-11(6-7 years after graduation).

What should i do to increase my chances(which look minimal now) of gettin matched?I have heard that many schools staright away reject your application if u graduated 5 years back....

Does a short(6 mths) research experience outside US in field of Genetics(Germany -as my husband is working here) would help me??
I shall be highly grateful if u can help me as i am in a depressed state of mind.
best,

Research (specially with publications) increases the interest university programs may have in you. But if you are able to get United States clinical experience (or even research), plus some american doctors' letters of recomendation, that would help you even more. Aim for great scores on the tests (that's what you have under your control) and choose well when applying, so you don't waste money and hope. The worst that can happen is that losing some money, but ending up being a better doctor, because no studying is a waste for us.

Good luck! wink

well, the good part is that you are aware of a problem and you have enough time to cover all your bases
in my case, even 2 years ago (when i started gathering information about USMLE) there was not much of a talk about being an "old graduates" going into match, so this year i was going into interview season with great fear that i will not match (and it is still there) because of my "age" and lack of USCE
if i knew then what i know now, i would have done things differently... so take the advantage and make the best out of your situation
good luck

smiling face the way i see things its not a different life you might have the experience that many people do not, the criteria programs choose their residents is not always logic or understandable. we have to play their game though. you are right abt the access at information back then. i graduated only (?) two years back, but i already regret having not known abt these exams sooner, and not taking them while still in medschool. with the knowledge i do have now, i could have done much better, no time to look back though... we're here now and we should only look into the future. are you done with your exams? hope to see you in step3 section soon.

hi,
i am also an old img graduated in 2000 . i have scheduled my exam for the month of april. its sometimes just difficult to put in all long hours as i used to previously. seeing all the 99ers most of them fresh graduates i just get demotivated sometimes . also the fact whether old graduates will get admission in residency or not is very demotivating plus my uw scores not really good. but still as i decided i am giving the exam , come wahtever may be the result.....
