1*met. alkalosis(vomiting)

Increase in body bicarbonate, secondary to met. alkalosis, would lead to a decrease in CO2 concentration in the cerebral circulation, depressing the respiratory center in an effort to compensate for metabolic alkalosis thereby leading to hypercapnia.

2*resp. alkalosis(Panic attack)

Breathing in a closed bag would expose her to a high concentration of carbon dioxide and thus reduce her respiratory drive and decrease her respiratory rate, thereby correcting the underlying cause.

Here's my question.

in 1, increased HCO3- used up of CO2, so respiratory drive goes down to accumulate CO2, right?

in 2, breathing of CO2 bag increases CO2 level in blood, but WHY does this decrease the respiratory drive?

thanks in advance.

CO2 rebreathing not for resp drive but for brain vessels to relax.
hyperventilation --> decr CO2 --> brain vessel constriction --> symptoms related.
I guess that is the answer

in 2, breathing of CO2 bag increases CO2 level in blood, but WHY does this decrease the respiratory drive?

Explanation1 - Increased levels of CO2 --> Cerebral VD --> Cerebral edema ( minor ) - the body senses that , so Hyperventilates , in an effort to Decrease CO2 --> Cerebral VC --> NO edema

Explanation2 - Well , you may go as far as to say that - a very high CO2 level would suppress the CO2 as a drive for respiration , leaving the central O2 chemoreceptors as the sole drive momentarily

Well may be our brain has psychokinetic abilities , and winkgrin when he sees that you keep "feeding" him with each breath you take , he might say : Wait , wait a minute , what are you doing here , you`re just about to choke me to deathgrin

Anyway , if you find a reasonable good explanation pls let us know

hero, i think symptom comes from the below...
(Panic attack)
; a trigger -> hyperventilation -> resp. alkalosis -> hypocalcemia -> sxs

hm..looks like Conversion disorder i explined...

brutus25

So increased CO2 -> supressed CO2 drive (it that high enough to supress resp drive?..hm interesting and that makes sesne)

VD(vasodilation),VC(vasoconstriction)... also interesting...

I'd rather to go with 2. easy to remember.

Thanks you guys.

explanations I wrote down from UW explanation(Electrolytes part)
