I too am working full time and have been for the past one year and a half.. have not taken a break from work in a long time.. I have absolutely no relatives in the US and I still did really good on the Steps...

people here tend to complain because they have to take some exams, which are nothing more or less than the exams the AMGs have to take.. think abt it!

I did not say it isnt hard or that many sacrifices have to be made.. I am just saying that it is easier to get into the American medical system than if you were to try to be a doctor anywhere else.. I have a friend who immigrated to canada many years back.. they didnt even recognized her highschool diploma, had to go back to school, attend classes and so on... you misunderstood the whole point

on the other hand, if you want to go big, as you said, yes the road is steepy but so is anywhere else...

Okay. Now I want to say that the above article does portray a very realistic picture of FMGs. I am an IMG from India myself. However I am a US Citizen who went to India to get my MBBS because I didn't get into at US med school and because I so very badly wanted to be a doctor IN THE US!!! The fact is Life is a struggle. I knew the road wouldn't be easy when I left US to go India....I had to live in a hostel with 17 year olds while I was 24!!!, I found insects in the food that was served to us , there were no heaters or coolers allowed in our hostels, I had to learn a new language since I had never spoken their language before, plus the attitude of the professors at my med school was so cruel, humiliating and rude for all students...Nobody cared for me there... And not to mention the countless number of times I fell sick with gasteroentritis and typhoid! All these things were a constant reminder of that rejection letter I go from the US Med schools that I had applied back home. I would just weep all day but my passion for medicine never died out and thats what kept me going! Today I look back at my med school where I spent the last 5 years....and I feel strong that I got through it...I got my degree that was my mission. My point is it was a STRUGGLE and I succeeded! And now as a am preparing for USMLEs to get back into the US system , it is another STRUGGLE. However, after going through so much pain at my med school I feel I can dissect out and get through anything in life. That should be the spirit. We IMGs never had a smooth sailing path. Just keep going and NEVER GIVE UP.

And by all means....come to this forum for support...And dont ever think you have nobody in this world. I know we have got to get through the USMLEs but these personal life issues can get you down emotionally at times. So, just come here and drop a line.....We will help lift your spirits up. And at the end you will look back and feel strong that you got through these hard times. Above all, try to stay happy regardless of what happens and deal with struggle.

And yes, alexa is right....USMLEs are the exams which the US students normally take during their med school. So, they are not just for the IMGs. Now don't you feel that you have enough brains, education and knowledge as them? You certainly do. So, just study up and get through these exams.

I agree USMLE's is not just for IMG's...afterall AMG's take them BUT

My sister is a AMG, she is in her first year of medical school, on the 2nd week in medical school they already started preparing for step 2cs, and the courses questions are directed like step 1

where do you think step 1 questions come from, they come from suggestions of american medical school professors

point being AMG are preped for USMLE's from day one, I don't know about your IMG school, BUT my IMG school did not prep me from day one for USMLE's

SO being an IMG is more of an uphill battle, and people have the right to voice their frustration, but that doesnt mean the person is using it as an excuse, if so then whats the point in taking the exam with that attitude won't succed

so sometime people need to voice their frustration and nice to hear support from others going through similar things....thats all

Yes dr.roh you are absolutely right. We all have a right to voice frustrations and thats what I was saying. We will help lift each other's spirits up. Yes, my med school doesn't prep USMLEs from day 1 but thats not a problem. Every year a handful of people take the Steps from our med school .....those IMGs who dream of going to the US....and they have all scored in the 90s. So, just because they don't teach us from day 1 , I am pretty much confident that I can do the steps on my own .....and so can you all. Its no doubt an uphill battle for IMGs but it is more than possible. Just relax and keep going .
