I could use some advice here, if not from prior personal experience, then from what others have said. Should the number of slots in a program be a factor in my decision about how I rank programs?

I had three interviews, and the cruel reality is that my first preference has 1 slot in the Match, my second one has 2, and my third one has 4. Now what shall I do? The NRMP website recommends that ranking should be based on the applicant's real preferences and not on the chances he/she thinks there may be for one program or another.

On the other hand (and this may be a totally different topic), each of my three programs had unfilled positions in the last two years, so perhaps I should not worry too much. I should add that I had good "vibes" from all three programs.

Thanks for whoever dares to give an opinion.

it shouldn't , if you do not match on the first one, the algorithm goes to the next program...
If you rank first your third choice and you match there, you'll never know if you could have match on your first 2 choices...
