Hi guys, Question I could not find posted on the site... I applied to both General Surgery and Ob/Gyn. In the unlikely (but never impossible) case that I would match in both... IS IT NOT A VIOLATION TO DECLINE ONE IN FAVOR OF THE OTHER?????? What do you think?

You won't match in both - you submit one list with your programs. You'll only match in one program.

bbb was very clear about it but just to leave it really really clear so that no confussion is held: It is impossible to match at two programs! No matter how many different specialties you apply, interview or even include on your list. Applying and interviewing is one thing. Many programs may want you but depending how high you are on their list and how high they are on YOUR list you will match at ONE place. On your list you can include all kinds of different specialties but you will always have to choose which program will go first, which second etc because even though in your case you applied and interviewed at 2 different specialties I bet there is one you want the most, you might not match there but you can always try. That is the main idea of people applying to more than one specialties, the vast majority have a favorite and the other(s) is(are) back up(s). Bottomline: you can apply and interview to all specialties known to mankind but you can only match at ONE PROGRAM IN ONE SPECIALTY. I also recommend that you read about the match algorithm at the nrmp website because it seems to me that you still don't understand it very well and you can make mistakes while doing your ROL. Remember to always rank by your order of preference!
