A 67 year old woman comes to the physician for her semianual exam. At her last visit she was diagnosed with hypertension after her blood pressure was found to be above 175/95mmHg on three consecutive visits. She has been treated for hypertension for the past 8 months with a beta blocker. She is compliant. Her blood pressure readings at home are logged around 150/85 mmHg. She was originally started on a low dose of beta-blocker. Whihc of the following is the next step in management?

A. Do nothing; her BP is very well controlled
B. Discontinue the beta-blocker
C. Increase the dose of her beta-blocker
D. Add an agent from another class to her therapy
E. Schedule a blood test and renal angiogram to rule out causes of secondary hypertension

I put D as well and got it wrong.

Right answer is C!

She was originally started on a low dose of beta-blocker, and is responding to it, so increase the dose first before adding another drug.
