Hello,

first of all, you can start by taking a diagnostic test to pinpoint your weakest areas. At any Kaplan Center, they offer this diagnostic test for free. It consist of 150 questions to be filled in 3 hours and will assess your strong and weak areas. After the results, start with your weak areas and work towards your strong one.

Also, you have to obtain the required material for your preparation and stick to it, if you are reading pathology just read THAT BOOK, not another author, otherwise you will be confused and its time consumming. I will recomend searching at the end of First Aid and see which books and materials are top rated.

About time planning and schedule, that depends if you work or are unemployed, and how long do you study in a single day. for example, I work from 9-5pm and start studying from 7-12. Make sure you get enough sleep and take breaks between studying otherwise you wil wear outnod

One last thing, practice, practice and practice questions after you are done with a subject and make sure you stick to that routine or you make your own one. I hope this advice will be worh it.

Hi Everyone, I need help too!

I am glad I found this forum, and feel some encouragements from some "old grads", well, I think I am an even older grad, an IMG, graduated in 1985, yes, over 22 years ago! I spent most of these 22 years on research, and didn't even think to try USMLE until recently i feel bored on recent work, while most of my med school friends have been practicing for years.... sad.. a good friend of mine visited me and encouraged me to go for it, but.... I have so much negatives in mind:

first, the age..... i was told program directors like to have fresh grads, for a over 20 years IMG, what is the chance for me even I pass step 1,2 one year later (if lucky)? then for over 20 years didn't practice, that may also a bad record ...

I don't even know how to start it, although I have planned step 1 on Oct. 2008.

Any comments from you, especially those "old grads"... any good examples or experiences? will greatly appreciated!

hey whoiam, Don't give up! never. I know very old graduates, much old than you getting a position here, obviously you need to be realistic with your goals. Like I said, there are some old graduates that found some positions mainly in Family practice, it's not impossible, but you need a good study schedule, good books, perseverance and commitment, like every body else. All this, and good support you can find in a excellent forum like this.

Good Luck to you!!!
