Happy New Year! I was wondering if anyone interviewed here. Can anyone please share some insight into the questions they ask, and are they IMG/prematch friendly? thanks in advance

I'm familiar with Newark, that's a definitely a dump. But what about the program, or is that what you were talking about being a dump.

Program Name: UMDNJ Newark Date of Interview: 15 Jan Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: live locally ,so travelled by train to Newark and then took hospital shuttle. Level of "stress" (0-10): 3 How many interviewers: 3 How many applicants: 3,more were invited but did not turn up! Tour included visits to: ER psych, inpatient Questions asked: usual..why psych, why us,what do you want to ask us.. happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes research oriented: yes / no / ? residencts are required to choose a topic for poster/publication during the course of the residency. prematch offers? no visa sponsored? I did not ask,do not need it. City: Newark, has high crime rate but area around hospital is safe. What I liked the most: camarderie amongst residents, child psych fellowship offered, lots of faculty with varied interests, recent residents have gone to columbia and yale for fellowships,100%pass rate, dorm accomodation available. What could be improved: perhaps more research Rate experience (0-10): 7 Conclusion:decent program ,varied pathology, easygoing atmosphere.I liked it.

the programs go with 3-4 quota to match each year and Freida says 8 positions. So it means they DO offer prematch!!

There's a new program director this year, NRMP states last year's quota. Maybe they do offer prematch but maybe this is why aimfor2007 said no prematch. Did you ask?

My experience is that the programs(all except the PD) when asked usually refuse any prematch is offered and say that it is "very rare or extraordinary" because it is considered shallow for so many to even "invite an IMG"!! Although you might end up receiving a prematch offer from that same program. AMGs do not like the idea of IMGs in a program, some programs set up different dates for IMG and AMG interviews so that AMGs do not see that "shallowness". I know, it is sad but it is true. IMGs are not really highly preferred for sure. They have a point that we are alien to the system and we might have adjustment problems in general. And these aspects are quite often questioned.

Apparently they used to offer prematches in the past but recently due to some problems with the univ admin ,the policy has been discontinued...that is what I was told. Yes they do have a new PD ,dont know if that makes a diff. As for IMG being the last resort, absolutely Yes!!!..we are here to make up for a deficiency in numbers mainly.
