What kind of visa do I need for the clerkship? If the schools do not require specific visa. is B1 OK? If I write the address in US as the university dorm, do I have to change to other kinds of visa like F or J1?? Or should I fill name of some hotel? Should I hide the reason I go to US for clerkship? Please help

Hey beater, I just returned from doing clerkships in the US. For all of them I went on a tourist visa. Most med schools ask you to come on a tourist visa (some specify it must be B1, some don't care if its B1 or B2). I had a hard time only on my last clerkship because the immigration officer didn't know what a clerkship was and although I had a letter from the US university stating I should come on a tourist visa, the officer insisted I needed a student visa or a J1. After 3hrs and missing my connecting flight, they checked their own database under "clinical clerkships" and confirmed I could enter on a B1. You shouldn't have a problem, but be sure to use the words "Clinical Clerkship" and tell them to check it themselves on their computer, that you are sure you can go on a tourist visa. My problem was I was using the term "clinical rotation" which is not in their database. I wouldn't recommend hidding information from them, because if after all their questions they realize you weren't saying everything, it'll be much more complicated. I think that once they see and confirm that you can enter on a tourist visa for a clinical clerkship, the address you write down won't matter if its a hotel or a dorm. Good luck and enjoy your rotations!
