it is pretty competitive, it's more competitive than IM categorical. So make sure you have an advance position to apply to (I believe it's not worth it if you are interested in IM, thinking you'll get a year of USCE) to show a serious application.
preliminary surgery is easier, and the toughest one is transitional year.
Once you log in to myERAS you'll figure out how to apply, it is very simple.

Apply widely to community programs (you'll be competing with strong AMGs applying to radio, opht, derm, anaesthesio). It's doable.

preliminary medicine is tough man, not impossible but tough, strong board scores, good usce and GC should make the trick...

Prelim medicine is just about as tough as categorical, but the key is you have to be a citizen/GC holder. Since these are 1 year programs, they normally don't sponsor visas.

I somewhat disagree. You can confirm on most program's web pages or scutwork reviews that most preliminary residents are AMGs. not say at university programs. AMGs themselves have told me how competitive it is to get interviews for a preliminary position, and heard of others (AMGs currently as preliminary interns) not matching at their first options, also at community programs.
I'm sure having a GC/citizenship is better as it is for all other specialties, but just to name a few that do sponsor visas for preliminary candidates: geisinger, st raphael's, jacobi, sinai, metropolitan, etc. I'm sure there are much more... but again, build a competitive application (including if possible: high USMLEs, USCE, USLORS, etc.)
