Though prednisone and prednisolone are used in the same manner and equally as effective, they should not be confused with each other. Prednisone is activated by the liver into prednisolone. For this reason and because it is more easily absorbed, prednisolone is the drug of choice when hepatic disease or insufficiency is present.

What would you choose between both for an acute asthma / status asthmaticus patient?

from e-medicine:

Steroids are the most important treatment for status asthmaticus.

The usual dose is oral prednisone at 1-2 mg/kg/d.

In the authors' experience, methylprednisolone provides excellent efficacy when given intravenously at 1 mg/kg/dose every 6 hours.

Some authorities report that pulse therapy with steroids at a high dose (eg, 10-30 mg/kg/d as a single dose) is associated with a more rapid response and shorter hospitalization and has similar adverse effects; however, this is not standard therapy.

For Moderate persistent asthma
Long-term control: Daily anti-inflammatory treatment in the form of inhaled corticosteroids (medium dose) is preferred. Otherwise, low- or medium-dose inhaled corticosteroids combined with a long-acting bronchodilator or leukotriene antagonist can be used, especially for the control of nocturnal or exercise-induced asthmatic symptoms.

In status asthmaticus:

Early administration of systemic corticosteroids (eg, oral prednisone or intravenous methylprednisolone) is suggested in children with asthma that fails to respond promptly and completely to inhaled beta2-agonists.
