Correct answer A

Germinal matrix hemorrhage is the most common cause for intraventricular hemorrhage in premature infants. The germinal matrix , composed of highly vascularized tissue with primitive cells is most prominent between 22 and 30 weeks gestation.

Hemorrhages within this area readily occur with common neonatal problems such as

1.-Hypoxemia

2.-Hypercarbia

3.-Acidosis

4.-Changes in blood pressure.

Hemorrahges in germinal matrix can extend into the cerebral ventricles and from the there into the subarachnoid space.. Smaller hemorrhages can resolve without sequelae. With larger hemorrhages, organization of the blood in aqueduct of Sylvius or the fourth ventricle or foramina of Luschka may obstruct the flow of CSF, thus producing hydrocephalus.

The bilirubin staining of kernicterus doesn t result in scarring.
