HI EVERYONE, happy holidays and happy new year.may all match this year itself. i had a question.my fren here has given all the usmle exams and wants to do direct fellowships.he has not done any residency and not done any fellowships till now.he has got a call for fellowship directly in one of the unaccredited fellowship program..i dont know what would be the advantages and disadvantages of it.as far as i know u cant take the board exams.also heard that the quality may not be too good but it doesnt matter as long as the university has good name and fame. so now is it wise to join a fellowhip directly?he has come here only for fellowship but was wondering if this really has gross disadvantages. please any one shade some views on this topic.it is totally new for me though

The only purpose to do residency here is to be able to practice here. It's not hard to apply for fellowship here even in very good university like Harvard and Stanford, but u ll face 2 problems: 1. Most of time they ll not give u salary other than stipend, so most of time u need to find a sponsor back in ur country. 2. You cant practice here after fellowship completed. (some may even let u take the specialty board exam, and u can join the society after passing the board, but can't practice) Simply put, wanna practice at home-> join fellowship directly. Wanna practice here->u need to do residency finally.
