The first line of host defense against inhaled organisms and soluble and particulate molecules is the dust cell - alveolar macropahge.

Clara cells SECRETE defensins and lysosymes. They also ingest toxins but those that they are able to detoxify with their extensive p450 system.

this question was also in the NOTES I got from a friend. The explanation given by him is his own! Feel free to object!
