drdido,hi i always set my goal as 10 pages /hr. (atleast that is what i used to do before, like say 10yrs ago!!!on other text books not kaplan)and if i can finish say 5 i'm on top of the world. if u are just doing kaplan notes then i woul say 15/hr.but then it depends on how fast u read or understand what u read.i 've always got a million things running around in my head or the back ground music of my son crying or wanting my attention so if i can finish 5 pages /hr i'm thrilled. but well that is my goal. i just feel it is ok for now while we are starting out and since this is a first reading and it is important that u understand what u read.i know that taking too long is also gonna make u for get what u have read but atleast u are assured that u have understood and then u r 2nd reading is gonna be more easier.in u r first read if u are doing 5 pg/ hr, in u r 2nd read u r definately going to be doing atleast 10 pgh/hr. Also another that i read in this forum a long time ago and which i had tried at some point is, set u r self a goal of 10 pgs / DAY that is if u don't have any time at all. make sure u read those 10 pages every day sneak it in here or there.atleast u will familliarize u r self with the material and at some point when u r ready or able to put in more time it will be a whole lot easier and what u have finished is already finished ,u don't have to start from scratch b'coz u've already done that. drdido you are absolutely right your child is at that age where his demands are higher I know at that time it was very frustrating to me that I used to break for days and days just giving up on everything but remember if there is a will there is a way and soon this will get better here is a few things that might be helpful :
1/ try to get your child in a day care if you can at least part time
2/ if you qualify ,there are some programs in some states {if you are in US} the so called early head start they accept children as young as 18 month it depends on the state
3/ if you have a church or mosque thats the best place to look for affordable help there are people out there who can exchange child care for small cash and in the convenience of your home.
4/ one thing that I found helpful is to arrange for play date with other moms you can be present but away in another room or in the mall say for 2 hours thats not bad,so you can study while your child is playing and being watched by somebody else.
5/ week ends were my biggest challenge if you can get your hubby to sacrifice and take care of your child that is super go to a library and make the best of it .
this is just some tips I'm sure other moms have tried much more do not forget that you will not be studying as some one who have nothing other than the usmle but there are mothers who had sucseeded against all odds.bottom line 1st reas is going to take longer but questions along with 2nd read will wrapp everything together.

mjbapana....thx so much for your advice.. i will do my best to do those 10pgs/day.
MOMS..In fact I am thinking.. let us moms start this trend where we come back to this paticular post and input how many pages we finished at the end of the day..that way maybe doing that daily..it will remind us that we must finish the those 10 pgs at least/day and keep us on track because we have to post how many we did..hopefully we can encourage and push each other harder. What do you gals think? I will start today..at the end of my study period and post how many pages I did.
laly1..I am working on getting my mom to move to the US and take my son off my hands for a few months... still trying to process how that's gonna work. Since it's only my husband that works .. we cannot afford daycare. I will look into the early start thing, thoough..but I will have to wait for him to grow first, since he is only 10 months.
Girls..thanks for all your input and please tell me what you think about the idea i mentioned above. i.e...SUBJECT/no. of pages read. thks again

@ arlete I want to know about your study material and plan, did you only used usmle, after reading askdoc's posts I want to start smartly.
Tell me as on old IMG should I just read Kaplan lecture notes/ videos , or should I start with the text books ( I dont have text books yet, but I will buy them soon)
@ drdido: A very good idea. i agreed. Today I did vertebral column and Now I am going to watch Kaplan vid of thorasic region ( only skeletal system) How about you.

But you mentioned that you are an old graduate too, so can you please satisfy me that how did you study wihout text books? 
As so many ppl here are saying that an old graduate should/must study the text to understand the subject properly.
I can't figure out yet that how to study? When I listen the dvd I understand it, but than I thought what if this is not enough, i should atleast read the chapter...
I wat to know why you decide your way, and how did you chose the mode of study, and how did YOU (Arlete) retain the knowledg?

Lets stick to the plan and finish todays study today, I will be completing yesterday's Physio chapter plus one anatomy chapter today, inshaAllah (by the will of Allah)

I din't buy any. I transformed the First Aid into flashcards. It's a way of learning (writing down) and it feels good reading my own handwriting, it sends a message to my brain that I've seen that already, at least once.
