Myocarditis in a 14 y.o. female is characterized microscopically by focal interstitial inflammation with Aschoff nodules and Anitschow cells.This is accompanied by the gross appearance of verrucous endocarditis and a fibrinous pericarditis. These findings point to acute rheumatic fever.Chronic rheumatic valvulitis with scarring can follow years later. The mitral and aortic valves are most commonly affected.

In almost all cases, the fibrinous pericarditis seen during the acute phases resolves without significant scarring and constrictive pericarditis doesn t develop.
