Hey friends.. Pls drop in your thoughts on this issue. I was glad to see the response from one of the faculty member who interviewed me, to my thank you letter. During the interview, we were talking about my current research and future clinical research and fellowship opportunities at that program. The faculty sent me a copy of an abstract submitted my one of their residents (who is currently doing GI fellowship in that hospital itself) and also the e-mail address of the ' GI fellowship program director ' and stated that "If I wish I could contact him to know more about gastro-enterology program at their hospital. ( I had mentioned that I was interested in doing Gi) How to interpret this? Is it a regular response or was he impressed with me? I guess that it could be either way. I am a little bit hesitant to contact the GE program director for 1. Don't know what to write to him and 2. Will that be any use in securing a residency position in that program? Thanks

Sprint 123, It is encouraging by all means. first, I would write to the faculty member thanking him for providing input, encouragement and introduction to GI director. Ask him to please forward your introduction preferably with the CV of yours. Then write to the GI director, introducing yourself, and write breifly about things you are interested in. Also tell him, you were referred to him by the faculty member you were interviewed with. Then tell him about your interest in the fellowship program and offer help in research, writing, editing or other workload. this is benificial in many ways as you can imagine. good luck,

Hi sachida...Thank you so much for your instant reply... That was really helpful.. I am going to write to the GI director all the facts that you touched upon. Do you think will it be a good idea to ask a 'second look' at the program to him like - attending GI rounds for a day..Luckily, the place is just one hour from my home.

Thanks ram3 for your comments. I was concerned about the fact that you have mentioned. I don't think I could express my interest more in the residency program as I was interviewed by both the program directors. As Sachida said, it won't be a bad idea to contact the Gi director not for fellowship opportunities but expressing my interest in his clinical research. Any suggestions?

First of all, congratulations for getting a positive response! The fact that someone who interviewed you has given you details about the fellowship you're interested in shows that they like you. If they didn't, they wouldn't have bothered with all this. I agree with Sachida - send a note to the GI director and tell him that you interviewed on so and so date with Dr ----- for internal medicine. Tell him about your past research work and your interest in GI. You've already impressed the Int Med department - there's nothing more you can do except perhaps a second look. I think this is a great start!!! Wish you all the best.. good luck!
