hi mezo....

during my first time....i didnt do much of uw world....and i guess just rushed through it....studied all kaplan books...but i guess didnt understand the basics...and then just took the exam as i wanted to start my rotations.......2nd time i was more cautious re-read all kaplan books....did first aid about 1.5 times....did about 97% of UW with cum avg of 57% and i also did an 7 hr block in uw 350 questions.....scored 50% made some really stpid mistakes......so i dont know where the deficit is? ! please help me ...thanks a lot

I think the 1st thing u did wrong is that u rushed , u were not cautious enough in 2nd time, and u jumped in perp Also, u didn't listen to kaplan videos, Goljan audio, didn't do kaplan q-bank, q-book, NBME , USMLE CD sample and didn't even finish UW , ur mistakes r so obvious, u just underestimated the enemy ( the exam smiling facesmiling face..... u have to have a solid plan and a rising prep. , what i mean u have to divide ur prep. in stages as follows.....
1st stage... watch to kaplan lecture videos, understand the concepts very well, and study the notes very well, solve the qs after each chapter( the ones in physiology r really good ) then do kaplan q-bank after each branch, take notes from the wrong qs, learn the qs, don't just solve them.

2nd stage..... review kaplan notes again and the q notes u got, and this time start looking in FA.... then solve Kaplan q-book.

3rd stage..... now give 1 week to listen to goljan audio, then do any form of NBME probably not the 3rd ( the most difficult 1 ), to c where u stand...
#if u got a decent score then subscribe for UW for a month, do it tutor mode, learn from each q u encounter and take notes from each q, at least the education objective...
# if u didn't then review the notes again & FA then subscribe for UW.

4th stage.... review the notes again & this time u should be already memorizing both the notes and FA and review the notes u got from UW and other q sources... then do another form of NBME to c where u stand....

5th stage..... if u got a decent score then u r ready to do the exam, now do Sample CD , and subscribe a gain for UW, now do it timed, Random to get urself used to the pace of the exam. then give 2 wks for final revision and go for the exam.

By this u have solved the most importnat q sources in order of ascending difficulty q-bank then q-book then UW about 5000 Qs, u 've memorized the notes and FA, and u assessed urself with NBME and trained urself on the time constraint of the exam...

Wish that helped.
GL
4th stage.... now

thanks for the great inputs and inspiration mezo......are u done with step 1? ...i realy like ur motivation ! i did do the kaplan videos and have done the questions from kaplan notes.....however i think i didnt memorize short points from first aid....just browsed it through....and should have done nbme's....i took nbme 2 a week bfore the exam.....i took it at late night......which i shouldnt have....and scored only 180..... .but still went on to take the test the week after..... if ur preparing for step 1 let me know what u doing now?

thanks

don't thank me, i just was in the same boot in step2 and friends support, made me through although not with a good score, but still passed 2nd time, and what i posted is a plan from a friend of mine who got 92 in step1 and 99 in step2, this is his plan for me, the problem with it is that it is so time consuming, but worth it, yeh i'm currently preparing for step1, still in the 1st stage, what about u???

dude how the hell did u got the guts to get examined with that score on NBME, it is tooo low, just stick to the plan and assess urself with NBME like the real exam. doing it early in the morning, u don't have to memorize FA if u memorized and feel more comfortable with the notes, but there must be memorization, with lots of qs that u learn from them not just solve to say i solved that and that, r u following????

Well I can say only one thing. Setup urself in a mind frame of passing USMLE. 2 atempts and both of them you trued your best. So now take one month break and get absorbed into your rotation, And stop worrying about the match because 2 atempts is not helping and neither will the 3rd if not done properly.

You and you know what went wrong and what sort of mistake you could have possibly done. Start with any subkect and rip it apart page by page. Get your concepts straight and start connecting the dots ( I know sounds stupid and feels stupid but it really works)

Take a break for sometime and then restart your engine and this time go slowly. With 2 attempts you surely have an idea about the exam. So plan yourself and most of all THINK !!
