Hi guys,

I´ve been going through quite a few homepages of IM residency programs at Univ. clinics and almost NONE sponsor H1b. Why is that so? (With a few exceptions, none of the big wellknown universities people here in Europe have heard of sponsor H1b, e.g. Mayo, Yale, Stanford, Univ. of Michigan, Georgetown, Brown, Dartmouth, John Hopkins, Univ. of Minnesota, Univ. of Chicago etc. etc.)

From what I have heard it costs the program more to pay for a H1b but I assume a lot of people, like myself e.g., would be more than happy to pay for the additional costs themselves so my question is, why don´t they sponsor H1b?

Advantages of sponsoring H1b would be:
1. Easier to attract the best IMGs
2. Easier to keep them at the hospital after residency and fellowship

The only disadvantage is that they´d have to pay a few more dollars for the H1b, something that many IMGs would be most happy to pay for them.

When the employer petitions to USCIS for H1B(1) visa, he must say that he gives you a permanent position along with salary and benefits... Moreover, H1B status allows you to file the immigration petition, and this issue will pop up anyway for any IMG, but again, the program will be obliged to give you what's needed (but isn't wanted) for this petition...
Now, ask yourself whether it is possible, and most important, needful, to promise this to every 10 PGY-1s who applies for a residency position? The programs know that they entitled to search ppl, and they have a good opportunity to take the best but without making obligations...

Additional factor is that H1B visa is given to those who hold a working position, but residency is TRAINING... Thus id does not classify to be used for H1b purpose unless you have a license to practice medicine (after USMLE step 3)...
