Is there a way to replace one gene of an animal with a gene from other animal ? I mean for example one mouse hase myostatin gene mutation. Mouse does not produce myostatin. Another mouse has normal myostatin gene. Is there any way to remove that normal gene and put mutated myostatin gene in its place ??

And is it possible to make that change heritable ??

And is it possible with big animals (like in Ina Dobrinski study) ?

first q's answer is yes you can replace one gene of an animal with a gene from other animal.

in the normal mouse you can knock of the normal gene and then replace it with the mutant gene.

you can use retrovirus, adenovirus or liposomes as a vector ( please read Kaplan Biochem)

to make this heritable to future offsprings you have to put the gene in germ cells as compared to somatic cells.

SCID (Adenosine Deaminase Deficiency was treated this way.) please note in the humans germ line therapy is not allowed because of its heritability to the future offsprings.

please note in new edition books they are saying that cystic fibrosis is being treated this way but they are not explaining in detail. just thought something you should know.
