hi,

i plan to start a residency in 2009.
My girlfriend wants to go to college and after that wants to work.

so, can anyone tell me, what the best combination would be?

marriage before or after immigration. is it better for her to have a j2 visa or a f1 visa?

I a assuming that you are planning residency on J-1 that is why you have described two options for your gf J-2, F-1.. and I am answering with this understanding.. With J-2 she will be able to attend school at most places but some universitites may have reservations against J-2 for standard graduate and undergraduate programs..(this is from my exp., my wife did PG studies at a uni. with J-2)... F-1 will give her flexibility and possibility of changing it to H1 at the end of her studies... J-2 will give her choice of getting EAD and working while continuing school... With your J-1 residency and her in J-2 for school, she will be stuck at the end of school/ your residency as she will be also affected by 2 yr HRR.. She will not be able to work for a while as she will be in H4 staus with your change to H1.. she will not be able ot change her status.... Let me know if this helps! I am happy that you are planning very much ahead of time....

it helps a lot. so marriage after immigration would be better...
still hope to get an H1

I think it is your personal matter...It would be unfair to advise you not to marry now as you both, still after marriage, will be able to pursue your educational destinations with appropriate visas separately... You will need to marry for visa purposes only if you want your gf (now, and spouse after marriage) to have J-2 while you do residency on J-1...

so, it is still possible for her to get a f1-visa even if she is married to me while i am on a j1?

Yes.. only if shes is not in J2 status. Means she will have to come to US separately.
