If you are in US on immigrant visa (green visa), then you can not buy insurance from your home country as your intent to be in US is not a visit.. You intend to live in US permanently... You have to buy insurance from a US carrier.. If yoiur intent is a visit, a return ticket with a short stay (months), you can still buy insurance from India... Make sure the travel health insurance provider has reliable carrier in US.. means hospitals would honour your insurance from India...

that is what I meant.. it can only be utilized for transition time.. but make sure they are accepted in US.... National Insurance Companies UK based US/Foreign carrier (claims processor) stopped managing claims suddenly last year and all the people who bought the insurance were in trouble. So make sure the insurance you carry is in good standing..

You can buy insurance in US but it costs a lot more.... if you have time, check out insurance quotes from good companies in US and compare it with your short term travel health insurance cost.. if cost is not a problem, then go ahead and buy it from a US company when you arrive.... so if you buy insurance from India (home country), you will be covered for a short period of time till you financially settle your self. get a job etc.. At that point you will be able buy your insurance/ it will be provided with your employment benefit.. If you are coming as a student, most universities have good negotiated rates for students (international students also)..
