I have signed a contract with a program which offers prematch.
They told me to contact a particular law office that will help me obtain H1b.
After meeting the lawyer, I was informed that I will be the person who are responsible for all fees, which is around 2,500 dollars for regular processing.
And 1,650 dollars out of this amount are the attoney's fee....

I would like to ask you guys who have to obtain H1b visa, wether or not you have to pay these fees. Or the program have to pay for it.
And if I have to pay can I process the visa without the attoney.

The H1b rules indicate clearly that the processing fees are to be paid by prospective employer. Attorney fees are not mentioned in this recommendation are paid by either party. At my institution all the fees were paid by the institution (including premium processing-- twice) and university has its own lawyer for advice. Your problem is, you don't know the employer/program good enough to ask or even discuss possibility of them paying this fees..

The government rules are that they employer must pay for the visa. I don't know how some residency programs get around this rule.

really depends on the program. some prog do pay and some dont pay, but i know that those prog who sponsor every thing will tell you during your interview or when you meet them to sign contract.

Government rules do not stipulate that H1B fees have to be paid by employer. What the rule stipulates is that in the event of a lay off employer should help the employee with return to home country.

So if the Law office is asking for fees that is perfectly legal for you to pay!!! Universities are poor and can not afford H1B fees so do not crib on that and thank your stars for getting an H1B.

Hmmm, so the attorneys at my hospital have been misreading this for years, eh? Thanks - I need to show they that they are wrong.

Why ruin good thing smiling face

My program paid the legal fee for H1B filing. I paid the attorneys fee which was 1250 and then premium processing. I think the program paid 750 or something.. thats what happened in Pennsylvania hospital.

For the Green card, the program will pay for the first step that is 2500$, after approval candidiate will pay for the remaining steps which per lawyer is aroung 3000$ in 2 years. Not a bad deal i thought.

I have ben offered a prematch and they did not know I have taken my step3. But they are sending me the documents for J1 visa as they think I do not have step 3. My step 3 was in first half of Dec and the results are still pending, what do you think if I should convince the program to wait for that (as the program may not be willing to delay the process) ? Should I offer them That I will share the cost of visa? that helps? at the end can one even deny the offer because of the visa issue after accepting that before?
