You knock the door, count to three, enter, shake hands, introduce yourself, (confirm patient's name at the same time), drape him, do the history, wash hands before physical exam, do physical, summarize, explain plan, ask if he has any question, shake hands, say bye-bye. Yes, always explaining what is going to be done. The patient needs to be comfortable before the hystory is taken.

So after the introduction should we just explain to the SP that we would like to drape them and proceed to it???? Yes. and should we wash our hands b4??? No. After draping, take history, then wash hands (before physical exam).

arlete hit the nail on the head Before I took the history I used the phrase "Let's start off by making you feel a liitle more comfortable" and I draped the patient while he/she were sitting on the examination bed. All you need to do is drape the patient from his lap to his feet so you don't forget to drape him/her afterwards.
