But the USMLE CD section one has one q that both of them show up as choices. Did I have hallucination???

Be kind enuf to explain if there is any. Dont just grin

The mere possibility I can think of is "when its just dissection its Aortic dissection and if there is widening with dissection it can be called dissecting aneurysm." I dont think this kind of discrimination carries any significance. Or atleast I DIDNT think till now.
Most of books(good books) use both terms interchangeably.

Any inputs??

there is some differences:
Aortic dissection is rupture in aortic wall (dissection) without a preceding dilation (aneurysm)
While dissecting aortic aneurysm is rupture in the wall of aorta (dissection) from a previously dilated aorta (aneurysm) like in syphilitic aneurysm
but know most of the textbooks only say aortic dissection because dilation is not necessary precedes the dissection

Mayoclinic website considers dissecting aortic aneurysm a type of aortic aneurism.
