Should I email them? From your point of view, give me some "verbage" to use in an email to applicants who confirm their interview, then don't show up the day of the interview.

Are you in NYC? LGA airport was closed for sometime last nite due to weather conditions and my flight was cancelled. This could be what happend...

I called and left a message on their machine and I also sent them an email letting them know what happend. Hopefully I can reschedule...

I think it is very inconsiderate to take an interview spot and NOT SHOW UP, especially after confirming it! There are so many people who would be so thankful to have that spot, patiently awaiting cancelations, and these people are ruining the chance for others.

bbb, as a program coordinator, I would e-mail the person 1 week before the IV date, to confirm if they are showing up. If they don't respond 3-4 days before the IV, maybe you could call someone else who is on the wait list. If they DO confirm and don't show up, I don't know what you can do and I'm not sure if an email to these people would help the situation in any way. I mean, what would you say: "Dear applicant, Thanks for not showing up. We were looking forward to interviewing you, but sorry to have missed you, but then again if you are so irresponsible to not even cancel your interview and waste our time and efforts, i'm sure you would not be a good candidate for our program." Sincerely, Program Coordinator.

Seriously though -TO EVERYONE to has gotten an interview but decided to NOT attend, PLEASE call the program ahead of time -at least a week before or earlier if possible to cancel. There are other deserving and qualified candidates out there who may never get a chance to interview and get a spot because of YOU... Think of others for once instead of yourself -after all, isn't that what being a doctor is all about???

Not going to say, but there are cell phones, phone booths, and applicants know how to use them.

Weather is an excuse for a call at the last minute. Not showing up is just rude.

bbb, i think you found the culprit...and I totally agree, there is no reason to not call and inform the director...

It might be besause of all delayed flight. Although I plan to reach the place of interview early morning a day before, but not sure if flight cnacelled or something like taht happens due to bad weather.

i totally agree with drvirgo. im not yet in the match this year but it pains me to know that some people are really inconsiderate at times... i know everyone is going crazy with the match but the least an applicant could do is cancel/contact the program before the interview so that they can give those who are really interested in the IV a chance =(

and what about gazillions of programs which dont bother to respond on the status of our applications(no interview invitations, rejections etc..just eerie silence), bother to answer our calls(god knows..i've left hundreds of voice messages this few months and got response from 5 of them),care to let us know the reason for our rejections(one program send an inviatation to an applicant with 88/91/pass/mph/h1 needed and rejected me 99/99/pass/mph/residency/h1 needed..when i pointed this out and asked for the reason of my rejection..they said"we cant reveal it"..how courteous and considerate..dont u think??, respond to thank you letters(response to some and not to others)...not to mention the rudeness of some program co-ordinators(this lady in NYC asks me..."have u taken ur step 3?" i said"no..i am..."she cuts me off mid sentence and says"dont u know u have to do step 3 if u need H1"? i said "yes, but i still have 5 months..i am giving my step 3 this week, would get the results by mid december and get h1 processing done easily"..she goes"yeah, everybody says that"..so i say" well, Your website doesnt say we have to do it before interviews..it says we have to before ROL submissions" she goes"we dont have time to update the website"..
i dont mean to berate anyone, but really everyone has skeletons in closets..

BBB, I'm not even at an accepting juncture so let alone refusal but I'd like to tell you I'm so sorry about what you have to face sometimes. Can't be easy.

Just tell them something like - U understand that there are circumstances in which ppl. don't make it to an interview but very rare circumstances when someone can't call. And say that you are sorry cause they are in such a circumstance.
If ur program wants them that bad then maybe u sud simply add to above that they have a week to confirm their interview. And that u wish them All the best.

Hope it helps. But let me tell u that wud say soooooooooo much without saying anything. It's soon going to be over so chin up. HAPPY HOLS! I wish I had snow here just to irritate u some more but sorry only Sunshine!winkgrin

Some PC's might be rude on the phone and a lot of programs don't bother to respond. But thats no excuse for losing OUR manners and informing the PC if you can't make it to the interview or if you decide on cancelling it. Why even apply to programs in the first place then? Our profession demands manners and respect. And PCs go through so much as it is so thats the least we can do.

You're welcome bbb!! I also hate this type of people!! It's a real shame we have to put up with them! I've met candidates that told me laughing that they just didn't show up at some of their Iv's and I was like what??!!! and on top of this you are proud of it???!! I had to take a deep breath to not say what was going through my mind... and it was something very similar to what I wrote!!! The bastards!!

Please guys don't ever do this! It's not only you out there!! We all have a dream..... if you were blessed with more IV's than you can attend or want why not give others a chance??!!

I have been on interviews where some dont show up this really makes me mad I think you should say you are selfish self centered person and i wish I would of never invited you

  #19

also maybe you invite just high scorers and these people do this because they can maybe you can try inviting people with low score I will bet you they WILL NEVER not show up maybe like I said you need to invite better applicants than you have and this wont happen just a thought

  #20

a big thank you to all the big boys with big scores, who are taking revenge on all the programs that completely ignore the small boys with small scores like us, by not showing up for scheduled interviews. I love themcool

  #21

yeah it makes me happy that people dont show up for interviews that shows the program director they invited the wrong people

Sigh - if I just invited the high scorers, would I be hanging out and helping here? I guess I can't win.

I recently went for an interview where I was the only IMG of 10. All of the other 9 had about 30 iv average. They called December "last push". They wanted to cancel on average 12-15 interview. All scheduled in January.
And all had about 15/30 program that were common amongst them.

When I asked them, when will they actually "cancel" the interview, as they were bitterly complaining how tired they were with the travel and interview process, none had any specific answer.

I openly told them, I would beg and borrow to get an interview, you all have luxury of not informing programs, but there are many like me who will happily take those spots.

I just hope few of them would head to my pleas. But who knows, those big name programs, may not even invite IMGs.

These match process is driving me nuts. disapproval

Totally agree. I recently went to a university program in southwest - out of 25 scheduled, 7 didn't show up(all are AMGs), which is nearly 1/4.

I feel so sorry for the program as they prepared so much food, so many documents, and the old PD actually memorized all of our resume the day before interview.
